Division Business Meeting,

1. Welcome and Introduction

IM Division Chair Grazia Santangelo welcomed all members participating in the online business meeting before the annual conference. She then introduced the EC members for 2023-2024: PDW Chair (Ilya Cuypers), Program Chair (Klaus Meyer), Division Chair-elect (Nandini Lahiri), and Immediate Past Division Chair (William Newburry). Finally, she presented the agenda for the meeting.

2. Housekeeping – minutes of 2023 business meeting

The Division Chair summarized the minutes of the 2023 business meeting that has been posted on the IM Division website. The Division Chair asked for approval of the minutes of the 2024 business meeting. The motion passed.

3. Appreciation for IM Service

The Division Chair, Grazia Santangelo, expressed her appreciation to the EC and thanked the IM Division Committee Chairs and other members for their service to the division. These included acknowledgements to PDW Chair (Ilya Cuypers), Program Chair (Klaus Meyer), Treasurer (Malika Richards), Communications Officer (Antonina Bauman). She also introduced and thanked the different committee chairs: Joao Albino-Pimentel (Best Dissertation Award Committee), Randi Lunnan (Research Awards Committee), Carl Fey (Teaching Committee), William Newburry (Professional Awards), Noman Shaheer (Research Methods) Antonia Bauman (Communications), Alex Settles (Membership Drive), Afshin Hamrabadi (Doctoral Student Committee), and Denise Dunlap (Scholarship and Engagement).

Randi Lunnan and Denise Dunlap will be rotating off their positions. The Division Chair recognized their contributions and thanked both of them for their work in supporting the division. 

William Newburry will also rotate off the EC. The Division Chair thanked him for his service, mentorship, and support of the division. 

The Division Chair also recognized and thanked the members of the different committees working within the IM Division. 

4. Sponsor Recognition

Division Chair, Grazia Santangelo, thanked the IM Division’s sponsors for their significant contributions to the division’s awards. She specifically named: AmorePacific, CEIBS, Florida International University Business, George Washington University CIBER, Georgetown University McDonough School of Business, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hyundai Motor, Northeastern University D’Amore-McKim School of Business, and the Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina. 

5. Treasurer’s Report 2022-2023

IM Division Treasurer, Malika Richards, summarized the financial situation of the IM Division. She reported that membership had stabilized after a decline over the last few years: membership of 1,960 (no allocation announced yet for 2025) as of July 2024; compared to 1,979 in 2023, 1,974 in 2021, 2,048 in 2020, and 2,337 in 2019. 

Sponsors pledged a total of $50,000 in 2024, up from $36,000 received in 2023. Major contributors were Amorepacific, China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), Florida International Univ., Georgetown University, George Washington Univ., CIBER, Hong Kong Univ. of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hyundai Motor Corp., Northeastern Univ, and Univ of South Carolina.  

CEIBS is also our new sponsor for the renamed IM Division CEIBS Best Paper Award in OB / HR / OMT.

In 2023 the division had a loss of $6,364 (but did not receive any allocation from AOM). For 2024, the AOM allocation for the Division is $30,394.

The Division Treasurer referred members to the AOM IM website for a detailed report. 

5. Division Membership

The Division Chair, Grazia Santangelo, reported that the number of members stabilized in 2024. Total number of members as of 1 July 2024: 1960. The number of student members has held steady as well. 

6. IM Bylaws Changes

The Division Chair reported on the process of Domain Revision as well as the Constitution and Bylaws Amendment that was undertaken the previous year. These changes were approved by a vote of the Division members. Approximately 10% of the IM Division membership participated in the vote, and 99.05% of them voted in favor of the amendments. 

7. PDW Chair Report


PDW Chair Ilya Cuypers thanked all those who contributed to the PDW program. The Division received 17 PDWs and consortia submission, of which 2 consortia and 11 PDWs were accepted (76% acceptance rate, total of 36 hours). 

Ilya Cuypers highlighted some of the sessions in the program. On Friday, there are PDWs on Geopolitics in International Management Research (organized by Jesper Edman and Qingqing Chen), De-Coupling, Divesting, De-Internationalization (Alexander Settles), Theories of State Capitalism (Ilya Okhmatovskiy), and Teaching about Globalization and International Business (Andrew Spicer).  

On Saturday, there are PDWs on Reviewing Papers in IM (Jesper Edman, Rebecca Reuber), Environmental Sustainability and International Business Research (Haitao Yu), Platform and Ecosystem Strategy in a Global Context (Liang Chen), Environmental Sustainability (Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra), and Teaching IB in an AI World (Andreas Schotter). 

Next, he discussed the division sponsored consortia: Paper Development Workshop (Daphne Yiu, Pei Sun), Doctoral Student Consortium (Jing Li, Charlie Stevens), Junior Faculty Consortium (Joao Albino-Pimental, Srividya Jandhyala), and Meet the Editors Session (Stephanie Wang). 

The IM Division Hyundai Motor Eminent Scholar Award session (William Newburry) honoring Yadong Luo will be held on Sunday, 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. 

The PDW Chair also thanked the Quinlan School of Business, Loyola University Chicago for generously hosting the Doctoral Student Consortium and the Junior Faculty Consortium. 

Finally, he mentioned that there are still seats available for the Chicago Boat Tour organized by the IM division at the annual meeting in Chicago, and that interested members can register online.

8. Program Chair Report

Program Chair Klaus Meyer reported on the IM Division’s program at the annual meeting in Chicago. He thanked all the submitters for helping to make the program a great success. He reported 402 paper submission in 2024 (vs. 391 in 2023 & 384 in 2022) and 39 symposia submissions (vs. 32 in 2023 & 22 in 2022). He also noted that the program features 196 Divisional papers in 49 sessions, plus 22 IM-led symposia of which two are showcase symposia. The overall acceptance is about 50% for papers, keeping with the AOM guideline. 

He thanked all of the reviewers. In total 394 reviewers supported the assessment of papers; on average papers received 3.21 reviews and each reviewer was assigned 3.48 papers. In addition, Klaus Meyer added his special thanks to the other EC members who helped with reviewing all the symposia, as well as Katherine Xin and Vanessa Hasse for their very timely reviews at short notice. 

The Program Chair also highlighted key themes related to theories and methods in the submissions. Among the different keywords, the trending ones included: Emerging markets & MNEs, Geopolitics, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Political conflicts, sanctions. 

Finally, he thanked the following members for assisting with generating award short lists: Fabian Froese, Chengguang Li, Valentina Marano, & Elizabeth Rose. 

9. Program Features and Highlights for 2024

Program Chair Klaus Meyer provided an overview of the program for AOM 2024. 

He noted that the pre-conference PDW program will take place on Friday and Saturday, Consortia and the Eminent Scholar Award on Sunday, and the conference program (paper and symposia sessions), the awards session and the gala/reception on Monday and Tuesday. The complete program is available online. 

Then he continued to mention a few of the highlights of the program:

On Sunday, the IM Division Hyundai Motor Eminent Scholar Award (4:30- 6 pm) will be presented to Yadong Luo.

On Tuesday, the Plenary session (8- 9:30 am) will feature Beth Rose, Jackson Liu, and Nakiye Boyacigiller, with Sonia Sackman taking on the role of discussant for the session. 

On Monday and Tuesday, there are a series of session involving the award finalists followed by the awards session and reception:

  • Best Paper Finalists [8:00 am – 4:30 pm on Monday; 9:45 am – 1:00 pm on Tuesday]
  • Best Dissertation Award Finalists [4-5:30 pm, Monday]
  • Awards Session [6-7:30 pm, Monday]
  • Reception [Monday, 8-11 pm: House of Blues, 329 N Dearborn St, Chicago; Sponsored by UMass Lowell, Manning School of Business]

10. Research Award Committee report

Randi Lunnan (Research Awards Committee Chair) noted that the division has 8 research awards, each with a specific selection committee, and provided an overview of the selection and evaluation process. 4 new external reviewers were added this year (Pamela Sharkey Scott, Arjen Slanger, Gabriel Benito, & Luciano Ciravegna). 

11. Best dissertation award committee report

Joao Albino-Pimentel (Best Dissertation Award Committee Chair) thanked the committee members and discussed how they broadened their outreach to encourage more people to apply. He also discussed the process of selecting award finalists and a winner.  

He then highlighted the session in which the Best Dissertation Award Finalists [4-5:30 pm, Monday] will present their work

He also thanked Davina E. Vora the past dissertation award committee chair for her guidance. 

Finally, he asked IM division members to encourage graduating PhD students to apply for the Best Dissertation Award and discussed the plan to hold a webinar to provide further guidance on writing an effective abstract. 

12. Online Research Methods Committee report

Noman Shaheer (Online Research Methods Committee Chair) provided an overview of the activities undertaken in the past year. There were 2 very well-attended webinars on IB Research in an Era of Industry 4.0 (2 Nov 2023) and Machine Learning in IB research (24 July 2024). 

The Research Methods Committee Chair also noted new collaborations with the Research Methods Division of AOM and the AIB SIG on Digitization. 

For the next year, the committee plans additional webinars and workshops on advanced and fundamental research methods to serve scholars in emerging markets and around the world. They are also looking for additional collaboration and partnerships opportunities to facilitate methods training in IB. He highlighted that the committee is open to suggestions for such new emerging research areas. 

13. Teaching Committee report

Carl Fey (Teaching Committee Chair) provided an overview of the committees activities over the past year. 

The Teaching Committee will organize two PDWs at AOM 2024 (Using AI to teach IB, and Teaching about global supply chains). 

Additionally, the committee also organized two webinars (Politics, Conflict and Technology, as well as Innovative Methods for Teaching IB using Real Situations and Gamification), and generated new website resources (past webinars, IB syllabi and textbooks, Teaching specific topics in IB, and Writing different types of cases).  

He encouraged members to participate in these initiatives and consider sharing their experience, syllabi, cases, and other materials as appropriate. He also thanked the committee members for their support. 

The Division Chair reminded everyone that the new YouTube Channel has the all the teaching committee webinars, as well as those organized by other committees. 

14. Doctoral Student Committee report

Afshin Hamrabadi (Doctoral Student Committee Chair) noted that the goal of the committee is to create a meaningful community for doctorial students from all over the world that do IM research. In addition to the social event organized at the annual meeting in Chicago (August 9th at 7 pm), the committee organized two webinars tailored to PhD students (Using Templates in Qualitative Research, and Storytelling in Academic Writing). Two other webinars are planned on Crafting a Paper for High Quality Publication, and Developing a Theoretical Contribution/Extension. 

He encouraged members to suggest and propose other activities and/or webinars that the doctoral student committee can organize. 

15. IM Scholarship & Engagement Committee report

Denise Dunlap (Scholarship and Engagement Committee Chair) reported on the committee’s organization of the AOM 2024 Gala Event to be held in Chicago at the House of Blues. She also mentioned previous years events. She acknowledged and thanked UMass Lowell PhD Students who assisted with the organization of the Gala events. 

Denise Dunlap will be transitioning off the committee in 2024-2025. The Division Chair thanked her for her service and introduced Sorin Krammer as the incoming Scholarship and Engagement Committee Chair. 

16. Membership Drive Committee report

Alex Settles (Membership Drive Committee Chair) reported on the committee’s activities for the 2023-2024. This included: participation in the New Doctoral Students Consortium at AOM 2023, launching the IM Division YouTube Channel, and supporting division webinars. 

Going forward, the committee is working to continue their recruiting activities. This includes encouraging doctoral students to attend the New Doctoral Students Consortium at AOM, sponsoring webinars that add value to members, and supporting events in multiple time zones to increase geographic reach.

17. Communications Committee 

The Chair of the Communications Committee, Antonia Bauman, reported on the new initiatives undertaken in the past year. The new Division LinkedIn page received 644 views in the past year while the Facebook page had 18,495 views. The Division Newsletter is also circulated twice a year. 

17. The IM Division Team for 2024-2025

William Newburry, the immediate past division chair introduced the members of the 2024-2025 Executive Committee: PDW Chair (Srividya Jandhyala), Program Chair (Ilya Cuypers), Division Chair-elect (Klaus Meyer), Division Chair (Nandini Lahiri), Immediate Past Division Chair (Grazia Santangelo). 

18. Future AOM Conferences

The Division Chair shared dates and locations of the conferences for the next three years. The 2025 conference will be held on July 25-29 in Copenhagen. This will be first time AOM will be held outside North America.
