The University of Sydney Visiting Chair in Contemporary India
The University of Sydney is seeking expressions of interest for a Visiting Chair in Contemporary India in 2017. The
Visiting Chair will be hosted by The University of Sydney Business School and be involved in activities that will
enhance the University community's understanding of Indian business, economics and politics, and nurture future
academic collaborations between Australian and Indian scholars.
The Business school is a world-class business learning and teaching institution that aims to inspire and enable future
generations of business leaders. The school takes an innovative "business not as usual" approach that questions the
prevailing norms of business, government, community, and students to work toward a goal of better economic and
social outcomes. The Business School has a strong international focus and is the only Australian business school to
achieve membership to CEMS – the Global Alliance in Management Education in addition to international
accreditation from AACSB and EQUIS. Qualifications earned by the School's 11,000 domestic and international
students are underpinned by a wide range of professional accreditations.
Expressions of interest should demonstrate:
• academic distinction including an outstanding research profile within India and internationally
• research leadership and an ability to engage with University of Sydney community of researchers
• superior capacity to engage in public debate beyond the University of Sydney community and showcase the
depth and extent of Indian research to a wider public
• proven ability to write for and appear in the media
• capacity to contribute to cross disciplinary conversations about pressing issues of regional and global
concern.
The Visiting Chair in Contemporary Indian studies will be expected to:
• engage in high profile public debate in Australia and deliver at least one public lecture
• be available for media commentary on issues relating to India as appropriate
• deliver a minimum of two Faculty Research Seminars
• provide guest lectures in existing undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs
• provide teaching and supervision support to the student body as organised by Faculty Dean
• engage with the India Advisory Group to provide support for The University's India Strategy
• provide general support to strengthen the overall relationship between the University of Sydney and India as
well as between Australia and India.
The Visiting Chair will be invited for a three month period and is expected to be available during semester 2, July
2017 – November 2017. The successful awardee is expected to be based full-time at the University for the duration of
the Award. A stipend of AUD$1,500 per week (total of AUD$19,500) will be provided for the duration of the
appointment. In addition, a return economy airfare will be provided to the successful candidate. All other ancillary
costs will be borne by the Visiting Chair.
