    Dear Colleagues:

If you teach Global Strategy, please consider the following for resource for your course:

Vinod K. Jain, Global Strategy: Competing in the Connected Economy

    Routledge, 2016

The link above provides more information about the book, reviews by both senior professors and senior executives, how to request instructional materials, and how to order or request an examination copy.

The book is being used at a few business schools in the U.S., Canada, and Germany (as far as I know -- based on requests for instructional materials). I have used it for my own courses on Global Management Strategy at Rutgers Business School, Newark and New Brunswick, where I was a visiting professor last academic year. I have also used the book in an executive seminar at the University of Maryland College Park and in a general management program at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

The book differs from many other strategy books in at least three important respects. First, it builds on the real context of business that exists today, what I call the connected economy – consisting of the old economy, the new economy, and the age of smart machines. Second, because the context of business continues to change, the rules of competition must also change. With new players, new playing fields, and new rules of the game, competition today is an entirely new ballgame. Finally, the book has four chapters on strategy implementation; strategies fail not because they were not planned well, but because they were not executed well.

It grew out of my experiences teaching Global Strategy at the Smith School of Business, University of Maryland College Park for almost ten years and many years of working for British and American MNEs as a middle and senior-level executive. It has dozens of company examples, mini case studies, all with a clear implementation focus.

Some new and/or significantly enhanced frameworks presented in the book:

§  The PRISM framework of foreign market selection

§  The Build|Buy|Ally framework as applied to capability building, innovation, foreign market entry strategy, and growth strategy.

§  Resolving the global-local dilemma through Transnational Strategy – using not only mass customization, but also modular design, platform design, and 3D printing.
