  • 1.  Statistics on free-riding in GVTs?

    Posted 09-22-2014 11:55

    Dear Colleagues,

Does anyone have (or can refer me to) statistics on participation rate (free-riding, social loafing, shirking, absenteeism) in Global Virtual Teams?

I've found tons of paper that talk about very high rates of free-riding in GVTs, but I can't find any that actually empirically evaluated the problem and can provide some concrete numbers.

    Thank you.

    Vas

    Vad,

Your request brought to mind a classic study with which you are most probably already familiar, Mancer Olson's The Logic of Collective Action.  He derives a mathematical formula showing the relationship between the size of a group and the increase in free-riding.  If I remember correctly, while this 1965 study does not use the term "virtual group," it implies it.  E.g., as the size of labor unions increase, free-riding does also, that is, fewer attendees at labor group meetings.  I believe that the relationship also holds for the number of people watching public TV and the number contributing to its support.  He divides groups into large, medium, and small in his analysis, but I forget the numbers specific to each group range.  It would be interesting if others on the listserv were able to either confirm or disconfirm his results for virtual global teams.  I suspect that confirmation will occur.  Good luck in your search for such data.

My sense is that it's especially fruitful to study participation rates through business games, which happens also to be my area of interest. If you agree, perhaps you and other interested colleagues might submit a paper on what you have so far to the upcoming conference of the Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning, on March 4-6, 2015. Submission deadline is October 13, 2014. See below.

    Best regards,
