The breath-taking economic growth in such emerging economies as China, India, Brazil, and Mexico, has brought new challenges to corporate sustainability. These challenges have fueled an increasing number of sustainability studies. In addition to the old "development or growth" debate raised by the western thought leaders in the 1960s, scholars have explored multinational corporations' sustainable strategies for emerging markets, and investigated local companies' sustainable strategies amongst institutional pressures. However, due to the complexity and uncertainty in these emerging markets, one cannot simply examine the efficacy of extending existing policy mechanisms from developed nations into emerging economies from developed nations in the West into emerging economies in the East. There also is a necessity to explore whether there is a need for new theoretical perspectives or new applications of current mechanisms in facilitating the corporate sustainable development in emerging economies. This symposium aims to facilitate dialogues on the topic through an interactive panel discussion format. The panelists will offer an overview of their own research on sustainability in emerging economies and a presentation of their current studies on the theoretical underpinning of corporate sustainability in emerging economies, followed by the moderator's summary and moderated discussions to stimulate further exploration of new research agenda.

Six research teams present research on corporate sustainability in emerging markets and explore effective strategies, practices, and policy mechanisms.
