Panel Symposium on Global Mindset and Beyond: In Search of a Rigorous Research Agenda
Scholarly contributions in the literature suggest that the concept of global mindset represents an important competitive tool for today's managers. However, our advances in scholarship are somewhat confused by the multiplicity of approaches and concept definitions. For instance, cultural intelligence, global identity, intercultural competence, cosmopolitanism, etc. appear as likewise important for international managers. In addition, the definitions and approaches offered for global mindset vary tremendously, thus, lacking harmony for theory development as well as rigorous empirical field study design. In 2007, a landmark article by Levy, Beechler, Taylor, Boyacigiller was published that reviewed and suggested a definition of global mindset as including cognitive complexity and cosmopolitanism. In the 10 years since its publication, how has the construct of global mindset advanced? Does it have construct validity vis-à-vis its other international management counterparts (cultural intelligence, global identity, intercultural competence, etc.)? It seems time to take stock of the last 10 years of global mindset research, continuously confront various schools of thought, provoke reflection and intellectual challenge, and consider what methods can be used to build a rigorous research agenda for the realm of global mindset and its counterparts. This, we have convened a panel of eminent scholars in international management in an interactive format.
