Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has increasingly become a global issue. Expanding formal regulations and informal codes of conduct, as well as pressures from social activists and institutional investors are driving the adoption of CSR practices internationally, especially in emerging economies. Consequently, as multinational corporations pursue growth through internationalization, they face new challenges that encompass social responsibility.

The proposed panel comprises seasoned researchers who are advancing institutional theory based research and studying CSR as a phenomenon of interest. The panel will address the following question: how do we apply institutional theory to study CSR in an international context?  We hope this session will help to not only further bolster the interest in the field but also provide guidance on new, promising and under-explored areas of research including but not limited to: i) corporate responses to the demand for greater social responsibility in addressing global problems, ii) diffusion of CSR practices across countries, iii) call for CSR as an alternative means for providing public goods, particularly in under developed countries, and iv) role of social movements and activism in spurring sustainable practices in the global domain. No preregistration is required for attendance. The panel will be organized in an interactive format wherein each panelist will address a set of questions related to the state of the field and research frontiers, while allowing for ample discussion and debates among panelists and interactions with the audience.

We look forward to seeing you at Philadelphia!
