43rd International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition
The 43rd Annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition ended with a gala banquet in San Diego on 14 April. The remote phase of the competition had begun on 6 February. The intensive phase started 12 April when students had the opportunity to meet and interact with other students from Canada, Europe, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
Participating in
The Business Policy Game simulation, all simulated companies were home based in a Merica area and sold their products in three Merica areas and one foreign area, either an Eastern European, a Latin American or a Southeast Asian country. They could build production facilities in the foreign area. They were initially faced with irregular financial data upon which to base their first decisions. After the data were corrected by the authorities, the teams worked for two simulated years attempting to gain a competitive advantage. Just as they arrived in San Diego, Hurricane Surprise hit Merica 3, cutting off all communication and devastating production facilities. It took several quarters to recover full production capability and more than a year and a half to return to normal sales levels.
Some companies saw their strategies blossom, yielding significant benefits to their stockholders. It is always interesting to watch some teams turn around a mediocre performance after they arrive in San Diego, and others take the opposite turn. It should be noted that students often learn more from their mistakes than their successes.
Make plans to join us for the 44th annual event to be held in San Diego, California, on April 17-19, 2008. The remote phase of the competition will begin in February 5th. Look for our fall announcement for more information or go to
