    EDEN DOCTORAL SEMINAR ON INTERNATIONAL MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS


    BRUSSELS, SEPTEMBER 7-11, 2009

    FACULTY
    The faculty of the seminar have published books and articles in leading journals, such as Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Management Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Human Relations, Advances In Mergers and Acquisitions, and have vast experience in consulting to domestic and international M&As. They were, and currently are, Guest Editors of special issues on M&As in several leading journals.

    TOPICS

    The seminar will focus on the specific problems and challenges encountered in international and domestic mergers and acquisitions. During the course, we will present and discuss alternative perspectives on these phenomena:

    • strategic
    • human resource
    • cultural
    • knowledge transfer
    • social capital
    • pre-merger planning activities
    • post-merger integration

    OBJECTIVES OF THE SEMINAR

    The objectives of the seminar are:

    • to provide an overview of state-of-the-art approaches to studying domestic and cross-border international mergers and acquisitions
    • to discuss specific theoretical and methodological challenges and foster critical thinking
    • to present and discuss various future trends, issues and perspectives on the M&A phenomena, such as strategic, economic/finance, human behavior, organizational and international cultural and others as well as the relationships between these research streams.

    EVALUATION

    The seminar will include presentations, discussions, simulations, case studies, and more. Reading materials that also include recent publications by the faculty of the seminar (theoretical, methodological, consulting papers), such as from Organization Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions, etc. will be distributed and discussed.


    Course certificates will be sent only to those participants that attend the entire seminar and complete the required assignments.
    The course merits 4 ECTs.

    PROGRAMME

    The seminar  will be devoted to lectures and discussions led by the faculty members based on pre-readings done by the participants. Participants will be required to do presentations of either a conceptual model that they have developed or a plan for an empirical study (or one that they have already carried out) within a specific perspective on international mergers or acquisitions.

    Day 1

    9.15 – 12.00 p.m.
    Success and failure factors in Mergers and Acquisitions: Three different perspectives: Economic/finance, Strategic Management, Organizational Behavior.


    12.00 – 13.00 p.m. Lunch

    13.00 – 17.00 p.m.
    What insights can perspectives from strategy, organizational behavior, international management, psychology, sociology, anthropology and other disciplines provide to our understanding of the nature, antecedents, processes and performance of M&A?


    Day 2
    9.15 – 12.00 a.m.
    How can various theories such as Learning theory, Resource- based-view, and others explain process and effects in M&A? 


    12.00 – 13.00 p.m. Lunch

    13.00 – 17.00 p.m.
    Theory development and methodological issues for various variables such as planning, strategic goals and choices, national and corporate cultural differences, due diligence, synergy potential, screening, evaluation, methods of payment, and other M&A issues and characteristics of the pre-merger process. 

    Day 3
    9.15 – 12.00 a.m.
    Theory development and methodological issues for various variables such as integration communication, autonomy, synergy exploitation, speed, control and evaluation, and other post-merger integration issues.


    12.00 – 13.00 p.m. Lunch

    13.00 – 17.00 p.m.
    Linkage between pre- and post- merger variables. Linkage between macro and micro level variables.Relationship between practice and theories and theoretical and methodological implications. 


    Day 4
    9.15 – 12.00 a.m.
    Multidisciplinary approach for the study of M&A.

    12.00 – 13.00 p.m. Lunch

    13.00 – 17.00 p.m.
    Future trends and implications for journal publications. 


    Day 5
    9.15 – 12.00 a.m.  Presentations of research projects. 


    12.00 – 13.00 p.m. Lunch

    13.00 – 17.00 p.m.  Presentations of research projects.

    Conclusion.


    PRACTICALITIES

    TIME AND LOCATION
    The seminar will be held at the EIASM, Brussels, Belgium
    The programme will start on September 7, 2009 and is scheduled to end September 11, 2009

    PARTICIPATION FEE
    The participation fee is 1500 €. This fee includes participation to the seminar, the documents, lodging and full board.
    Doctoral students will be assigned rooms for two.

    Should you wish a single room, an extra fee of 25 € per night will be charged to you.

    Cancellations made before August 20, 2009 will be reimbursed with 10% deduction of the total fee. No reimbursement will be possible after this date.

    EIASM SCHOLARSHIPS
    The Institute offers a limited number of scholarships of 700 € each. Scholarships are strictly limited to students coming from an EIASM Institutional Member (
    the Academic Council). Allocation of the scholarships is entirely at the discretion of the European Institute.

    APPLICATIONS
    Interested doctoral students should
    register online (and add the required documents) no later than July 15, 2009. Besides doctoral students, other researchers may participate. The number of participants will be limited to create a stimulating environment. The selection among the applicants will be conducted by the Institute's Faculty. They will review the following documents which should necessarily complement each application form:

    • the applicant's curriculum vitae demonstrating his/her capabilities of doing research ;
    • a letter of recommendation of his/her local faculty supporting the application ;
    • a two-page description of his/her doctoral research, indicating the general objectives.
