  • 1.  Schwartz Values Survey: Instruments to assess cultural values

    Posted 03-07-2007 06:09
    Dear Paul,

Hofstede dimensions, and their effects on management behavior in mergers and
acquisitions, were compared to Corporate Culture dimensions in international
    mergers in:

*Weber, Shenkar and Raveh, 1996, Management Science.
*Weber, Reichal and Tarba, 2006, Best-Paper-proceedings, Academy of
    Management, Atlanta, August.

Further, Markus Vodosek inquired about individuals and groups...The
Corporate Culture instrument can be useful for measuring values in
organizations in the same country and compare values in:
    a. between organizations from different countries
    b. between organizations in the same country, and
    c. the same organization in the same country

For more details about the Corporate Culture instrument, dimensions, items,
reliability, validity, etc., and effects on human behavior and corporate
performance, please refair to other publications, such as:

*Weber 2000 "Measuring Cultural Fit...." at Ashkanasy, Wilderom and Peterson
(Eds.) Handbook of Culture and Climate.

*Chatterjee, Lubatkin, Schweiger and Weber (1992)Strategic Management
    Journal

*Lubatkin, Schweiger and Weber (1999) Journal of Management

    Weber (1996) Human Relations

    Regards,
    Yaakov

    Hi

    Romie's response is very useful.

Has anyone published a paper comparing and evaluating these various
    instruments?

If not - do any of you have any serious plans do to so in the near future?

    Regards
    Paul

    Hi there,

I'd like to find out what different instruments are out there to assess
cultural orientations or cultural values of individuals and/or groups.
I'm familiar with the following instruments:

Cultural Perspectives Questionnaire (Maznevski et al., 2002), available
    from IMD at http://www.imd.ch/research/projects/CPQ.cfm

Geert Hofstede's Values Survey Module 1994
    (http://feweb.uvt.nl/center/hofstede/VSM.html)

Triandis and Gelfand's (1998) instrument to measure horizontal and
    vertical individualism and collectivism

    World Values Survey (http://www.worldvaluessurvey.org)

Are you aware of any other instruments?

    I'd greatly appreciate your pointers.

    Regards,

    Markus Vodosek

    Posted 03-07-2007 18:52
    Dear Dr. Gooderham,

Along with Julie Rowney, I have collected information about quite a few
instruments that have been developed/used for assessing cultural values (the
    complete catalogue available at
    http://www.ucalgary.ca/~taras/_private/Culture_Survey_Catalogue.pdf).
The catalogue does not directly compare different measures and would not
provide a complete answer to your question, but it reports some data on
psychometric properties of most of the measures which may give you some idea
    about qualify of different instruments.

We presented a paper last year (currently under review) that was based on
the review of these measures. The paper provides a general overview of the
major approaches and techniques for measuring culture and discusses common
challenges of quantifying cultural values. It may also provide a partial
answer to your question. You can download it here
    http://www.ucalgary.ca/~taras/_private/measuring_culture.pdf

    Sincerely,
    Vas
