    The Department of Management of Organizations at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is recognized internationally as a significant force in research. The Department admits Ph.D. students in an on-going basis. We process applications for both the autumn and the spring semester.

    The <st1:placename w:st="on">HKUST</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Business</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype> has been repeatedly named as the top business school in <st1:place w:st="on">Asia</st1:place>.     The Department of Management of Organizations (MGTO)

    u        The Department is a leading intellectual center for management research, with a focus on the Pacific Rim, especially <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">China</st1:place></st1:country-region>. It was founded in July 1994, three years after the founding of the University and the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Business</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">School</st1:placetype></st1:place>. Over the past ten years, the department has built a group of diverse and high-quality faculty members whose expertise covers such areas as organization theory, business strategy, organizational behavior, and human resource management. To facilitate intellectual exchange and knowledge diffusion, the department played host to over 60 visiting scholars who spent between two months to two years teaching and researching on campus. It has organized two international research conferences, numerous workshops, and established the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Hang</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Lung</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Center</st1:placetype></st1:place> for Organization Research (HLCOR) and co-sponsored a new journal Management and Organization Review. It also has established a long-term program of collaborative research with organization researchers in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">China</st1:place></st1:country-region>. Faculty members consistently publish their works in top journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal, while some of them are, currently, editorial board members of Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, and Personnel Psychology.

     

    PhD Program in Management

    The PhD program in management prepares students for a research and teaching career in research universities. The program has a global perspective with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region. Students can specialize in one of the following four management areas: a) human resource management, b) organizational behavior, c) organizational theory, and d) strategic management. Our program provides:

     

    u        Generous fellowships for all qualified PhD students and Research Travel Grant for PhD students to present papers in international conferences

    u        Well-planned, sequenced PhD coursework covering core topics in management including Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Organizational Theory, and Strategic Management

    u        Elective PhD seminars taught by distinguished visitors from around the world (e.g., Richard Scott of Stanford University, John Freeman and James Lincoln of University of California, Berkeley, Martin Kilduff, Dave Harrison and Donald Hambrick of Pennsylvania State University, Marshall Meyer of University of Pennsylvania, Andrew Van de Ven of University of Minnesota, and Chen Ming Jer of University of Virginia.)

    u        Intense hands-on research experiences through working with faculty members on joint research projects

    u        Bi-weekly faculty research seminars and PhD student research colloquiums

    u        Successful placement of graduates in research institutions (e.g., Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Sydney, Australia National University, Peking University, Hong Kong Baptist University, and Shanghai Jiaotung University.)
