As higher education is increasingly more diversified, the contemporary university culture is influenced not only by its fundamental values which interact with different factors of turbulent life, but also the existing culture of the higher education system. Therefore, the conference will seek answering the questions: What is the meaning of university culture? What are the values of contemporary higher education in the changing society? Are they influenced by country-specific context? Do these values provide a background for a sustainable development of the society? What is the relationship between the cultures of higher education institutions of different types? What is the role of university values in the overall culture of higher education?

    Another important aim is to consider is the culture of university organisation: What values of higher education are encoded in this managerial concept? Who are the members of academic community and what is their culture? What are the tendencies of change in the culture of university organisation and academic community? For instance, what are the tendencies of change in the culture of different university departments in accordance with interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches? How university culture is influenced by students who are often most energetic but provisional members and at the same time clients of the institution? How scholarly culture is manifested in different cultural contexts?

    The UNIQUAL 5 will also aim to discuss the relationship between the culture of teaching and culture of learning, the culture of communication and cooperation between teachers and students: what are the changes and tensions in this area? What are the reasons for these problems?

    Papers focusing on the following or related issues areas are welcome:

                values of contemporary higher education in the changing society;

                meaning and quality of university culture;

                culture of academic discipline;

                relationship between the cultures of higher education institutions of different types;

                role of university values in the overall culture of higher education;

                members of academic community and their culture;

                students' influence on the culture of university organization;

                scholarly culture as a global phenomenon; the changes and tensions in this area and the reasons for problems.

    Important dates:

    (1)   Abstract submission by 1 September 2007 at ei@ktu.lt.

    (2) Paper submission and registration by 15 September 2007.

    Selected papers will be published after the conference.

    About the conference: general issues

    The Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Xiamen University (China) and Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania) have formed a so called "academic triangle" which holds annual conferences on higher education quality not only for researchers in higher education, but also for those in other fields who relate their activity to higher education: higher education policymakers, managers, representatives of culture, business and industry. The founding institutions take turns in hosting the UNIQUAL conferences. In 2004 the conference was held in Lithuania, in 2005 - in Norway, in 2006 - in China. In 2007, Lithuania will host the UNIQUAL 5.

    This conference may be characterised by several specific features, including:

    1. even though it is devoted to higher education quality, different issues of quality are at focus each year. For instance, the focus of UNIQUAL 4 held at Xiamen University in 2006 was staff development as key assurance measure for university quality.

    2. The issues discussed at the conference are related to different contexts: country- specific and global. The country hosting the conference also seeks to attract the attention of conference participants to the country-specific context and relate the issues discussed at the conference to it in the hope that the conference becomes standing in terms of maintaining fruitful relationships among researchers which are developed at the conference. For this reasons, the hosting institution seeks to introduce the cultural gems and historical attractions of the country to the conference participants as well as provide them with an environment for communicating with local researchers.
