VCU Business Forum to examine power shift due to globalization

    Published: February 23, 2009

Globalization has created a shift in power from Europe and the United States to Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

Virginia Commonwealth University's 15th Annual International Business Forum will discuss tomorrow what globalization means in the U.S. and abroad. The topic: "The third great power shift in modern history: The post-Western world as globalization gains depth and breadth."

"We're going to lose our share," said Van R. Wood vrwood@vcu.edu , a professor of International Business at VCU who will moderate the discussion. "The pie is going to grow larger and our share is going to get smaller."

The shift, its impact here and how government, companies and individuals can respond or innovate to remain competitive in a global environment will be part of the panel discussion.

"The world is changing," Wood said, but "there is debate as to what degree it is changing."

    The three panelists are:

Hans Martens, chief executive of the European Policy Center.

Paul H. Grossman Jr., director of international trade and investment for Virginia Economic Development Partnership. The free event is from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the VCU Student Commons Ballroom, 907 Floyd Ave. The event is open to the public. Registration is not required. -- Emily C. Dooley
