Evolving Roles of the (Honest and Dishonest) Businessman and the Government in the 21st Century, or,
Fundamental Things that Business Scholars and Educators Should Dare to Care about
ABSTRACT
The recent global economic crisis has provoked renewed attention to systems for organizing economic activity around the world. In particular, the efficacy and merits of capitalism—and the free enterprise system that it entails—have been called into question by political leaders and the general public across the globe. That the world has ‘melted down’ economically is deemed sufficient proof of the failure of capitalism as a system for human societies to engage in meeting members’ needs and wants and in producing wealth and progress. The ethical foundations of business education have been swept into this broad critique with troubling reputational repercussions for business faculty and students.
In counter, renewed support for proponents of free markets provides evidence of opposing interpretations of our current economic situation and related recommendations regarding appropriate/effective organization of economic activity. Yet these views, and indeed first principles inherent in business (education) are seldom explored in the Academy.
Given this year’s conference theme, a critical and informed examination of perhaps the most foundational underpinning of business and management—economic organization where free markets are central—is urgently called for. This integrated research and practice PDW will advance that aim by introducing academic, policy and practitioner views relevant to management faculty.
The PDW experts will (re-)introduce key issues relevant to this debate and pose important questions for our AoM colleagues to consider as they design their courses, develop their research programs and engage as thought leaders with a range of audiences.
