    POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

    Area Director – Culture and Less Commonly Taught Languages

    Senior Research Scientist

     

    The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is seeking to expand its senior research leadership in the area of Culture and Less Commonly Taught Languages.  Applications are invited for an Area Director (AD) to lead CASL's interdisciplinary research program investigating a range of basic issues and applied problems related to working with or learning less commonly taught languages.  CASL is also interested in the use of cultural knowledge to improve performance in these areas. Current projects involve cross linguistic description of African languages, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Pashto and Persian. CASL is also developing supporting cross cultural knowledge prototypes and scenarios for its research in language learning and use.  The position has 3 major components:

    ·         Research management:  The AD works with CASL researchers, US government representatives and customers to develop scientifically sound research projects that respond to government needs and requirements.

    ·         Staff supervision and mentoring: The AD supervises research scientists and support staff within the CLCTL research area.

    ·         Leadership/Management: The AD provides leadership on strategic research issues and other CASL management issues.

    Appointments to CASL are as members of the research faculty of the University of Maryland under renewable three-year contracts, with highly competitive salary (12-month) and benefits.

    Qualifications: Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in linguistics, a relevant language area, or in a field with a focus on the relationship between Language and Culture such as anthropology, sociology, or psychology. The candidate should possess a demonstrated record of individual research achievement, a strong record of publication, and the ability to establish an interdisciplinary research program across areas related to the study of language or culture. The candidate should have a demonstrated record of research supervision and leadership, and experience in research administration.

    Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain the appropriate security clearance.

     

    CASL, established in 2003, is the nation's 10th university-affiliated research center.  Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research that results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals.  Our research focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly taught languages, enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals, advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in government professions, and improving the quality of human language technology.
