Business Development Workshops: Best Practices & a "Train the Trainer" Session Focusing on Haiti

    Session #: 245 Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 7 2010 10:15AM - 5:15PM at Le Centre Sheraton in Salon 8

This workshop discusses how to create and deliver workshops on local business development in emerging markets.  These workshops typically provide instruction on the "ABCs" of business and economic development to would-be entrepreneurs, NGO volunteers, or government officials.  This workshop will be conducted in French and in English.  The first hour will bring together AOM scholars, who have conducted similar workshops in emerging economies around the world, to discuss best practices as well as necessary adaptations based on important locational differences.  This will be conducted in English and we can also discuss ways to encourage AOM to transfer business knowledge to those in need.

The rest of the workshop will be a "Train the Trainer" session focusing on Haiti.  This "Train the Trainer" workshop will teach a select group of Haitian volunteers how to organize and conduct these workshops upon their return to Haiti to transfer basic business skills to potential Haitian entrepreneurs.  Working with businesses, we have arranged sponsorship for the Haitian volunteers' travel expenses (including airfare); in turn, these volunteers commit to organizing such workshops upon their return to Haiti.  Of course, Haiti needs much more urgent aid, but developing these skills will encourage business and economic development.  Mr. Benariba, Senior Consultant at SAJE Montréal-Centre, will lead this session. He has conducted numerous such workshops in many countries in French, English, and Spanish.  A not-for-profit Haitian school, Economic Growth Initiative for Haiti, has committed to provide free use of its facilities to conduct these Haitian outreach workshops.  We hope this workshop will provide a template for transferring the substantial business knowledge of AOM members to economic development and self-help projects in areas most in need.  Below is information about the AOM.  For more information on this workshop, please contact Dr. John M. Mezias at 305-284-1073 or jmezias@miami.edu.
