  • 1.  Cross-national categorisation of education level

    Posted 07-28-2010 05:13
    Dear all

I am conducting a study (concerning investment behavior) which will involve a survey sample with mixed nationality. I need to control for highest level of education.

The most important distinction will be between qualifications arising out of compulsory schooling, first degree, masters degree and doctorate level.

I need to construct a question which will make sense to people of different nationalities and provide a 'good enough' categorisation.

Unfortunately, it is very unlikely that we could distinguish nationality apriori in the sample and construct different questions for each.

Does anyone have experience of this issue? Maybe some one even has a question or questions which they have used successfully before?

    Many thanks for your help

Mark, this is an extremely difficult problem to solve. I have seen it handled two ways. Ask nationality and number of years of formal education and convert (or not, just use years) to probable degree completed, or categorise:
    Post-graduate degre
    Some post-graduate studies
    Bachelor's degree
    Sub-bachelor's degree
Some university study but no degree
    High school diploma completed
    Some high school studies
    Some elementary school studies
    No formal education.
