  • 1.  Cross-cultural management videos

    Posted 11-11-2008 17:49

It's been quite some time since Mark Fenton-O'Creevy posted his request for videos on cross-cultural management challenges. I just realized that we missed one important and excellent video example. It's probably too late for Mark, but I thought I would still share the link in case other people are interested.

The example I am referring to is the famous blue-brown-eye experiment from 1984. You probably have heard about it. It would enrich any class on cross-cultural communication and cooperation challenges and prejudice. The video log of the experiment could be found here:

    Part 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXcO0Ah64rM&feature=related

The first two parts are about the experiment itself, whereas the rest is a discussion.

Here is a good video on challenges of cross-cultural communication. I use it to illustrate the point that similar languages often cause more confusion that languages that are completely different.

In addition to the movies that have already been listed, take a look at Mr. Baseball. It has a few episodes that illustrate welly well challenges of cross-cultural communication in Japan-US context.

Let me support using Gung Ho – it's a great movie for this purpose. I also use Bend it Like Beckham and sometimes clips from various Star Treks.

    Dear Mark,

look for the movie "GungHo" starring Michael Keaton. Lots of material in there that can be used in a session on cross-cultural management. Also, on YouTube you'll find a number of things - an interview with Ghosn talking about the importance of cross-cultural skills for leaders, a brief segment from the movie "Japanese Story", as well as bits and pieces on Hofstede, Trompenaars and Hall.

    Good luck with your session,

    Gerhard
