Fellow members of the Academy of Management,
We hope you will be able to join us for an exciting panel symposium at this year's AOM meeting in Anaheim on The Big Questions of International Ethics: Evaluating Corruption and Responsibility Across Borders, sponsored by the SIM, IM and OMT divisions.
The particulars:
Day: Tuesday August 12th
Time: 8:30 am - 10:10 am
Place: Anaheim Marriott Orange County 3
The panelists:
Mikelle A. Calhoun, the Ohio State University
Jonathan P. Doh, Villanova University
Jennifer J. Griffin, George Washington University
Peter Louis Rodriguez, the University of Virginia
Klaus Uhlenbruck, the University of Montana
Duane Windsor, Rice University
In 2006, The Journal of International Business Studies ("JIBS") published a special issue addressing three significant concerns of multinational enterprises ("MNEs") - politics, corruption and corporate social responsibility ("CSR"). The intent of this symposium is to continue the dialogue, focusing on the international ethics issues of corruption and CSR.
We plan to use a format that balances panelist involvement and audience participation. In keeping with the theme of this year's meeting, "The Questions We Ask", we will use three overriding questions to facilitate this plan by providing a structure that allows each panelist to discuss an aspect of international ethics in sufficient detail to allow for meaningful discussion. The questions we intend to explore in this symposium are:
1. What are the distinguishing features of the field of international ethics and how do or should MNEs adjust their approaches to ethical issues across countries? (Windsor & Doh)
2. What advances have we made in understanding negative ethical events such as corruption? What are its defining features, its antecedents and its affect on markets and MNEs? (Rodriguez & Uhlenbruck)
3. What advances have we made in understanding CSR as it involves MNEs? What are its defining features, its antecedents and its affects on markets and MNEs? (Griffin & Calhoun)
Our goal is to promote better understanding of the subject matter and provoke further development of ideas on important international ethics issues through debate, questions and commentary involving all panelists and the audience. We hope you join us, to help us achieve this goal.
If you would like more information regarding the symposium, please see the full abstract in the program or contact me at the e-mail address below.
We look forward to seeing you there!
