Knowledge Management in Emerging Economies: Social, Organizational and Cultural Implementation

A book edited by Prof. Minwir Al-Shammari, University of Bahrain, Bahrain

To be published by IGI Global:

    http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=634

    Introduction

Knowledge is evolving in the new economy as a distinctive core competency and as a main source of wealth for many countries as well as companies. Important knowledge can represent knowledge on products, customers, markets, projects, as well as processes. Managing knowledge, as a non-depleting corporate resource, can help in the creation of sustainable competitive advantage for today's competitive and globalized business world. Knowledge Management (KM) value chain starts with generation and ends with application. It involves strategic planning, capturing or generation of knowledge, sharing it among partners or suppliers, and using it for various business applications. KM ideas have been available to managers for millennia, but only recently have been integrated into the mainstream of corporate planning and decision making process. Nowadays, many economies are shifting from information-based to knowledge-based economies.

    Objective of the Book

There is greater realization in world economies of opportunities in the creation, acquisition, distribution, and use of organizational knowledge. Emerging economies in particular, known for their scarce resources, may find utilization of knowledge as a non-depleting asset for achieving sustainable competitive, rather than comparative, advantage. However, the literature of KM mainly relates to initiatives conducted in Western countries. This book seeks to cover this gap in the KM literature by focusing on KM theoretical models and empirical research findings for developing economies. Successful implementation of business concepts and practices (i.e. KM) in Western environmental contexts may not necessarily replicate with success in a non-Western context, if implementation was not carefully customized to fit the available organizational infrastructure and to the specific society and culture. This book specifically seeks to understand the social, organizational, and cultural implementation aspects of KM in the context of developing economies, and to discuss issues, challenges, and trends surrounding this implementation. This book will cover a wide variety of KM applications and models in government, non-government, and private sector entities.

    Target Audience

This book will be useful for professionals, researchers, executives, and academics working in the field of KM, information systems, international management, and strategic management. Moreover, the book will provide insights and support to policy makers, government executives, and corporate executives concerned with the management of expertise, knowledge, and organizational development in emerging economies.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Knowledge generation

    Knowledge sharing

    Knowledge application

    KM strategy

    KM technologies

    KM culture

    European Union–Mexico

10 Years of The Free trade Ageement

    Book publishing

    Call for Chapters

In the 1980's Mexico significantly transformed its international economic policy from protectionism to trade-liberalization. Two of the most notable occurrences in this framework were the formation of the North American Free Trade Area in 1994 and the Mexican – European Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force in 2000. Both granted Mexico a preferential access to two of the most important and dominating markets of the world.

Due to their strong commercial ties, the Mexican - US relations in the context of NAFTA have been analyzed in profusion by academic literature. On the other hand, even with the entry into force of the EU - Mexico Free Trade Agreement, EU´s position as Mexico´s second most important trading partner and the recent classification of Mexico as a "Strategic Partner" of the EU, little reference has been made to the legal, commercial and business relations of this partnership.

To enrich the discussion in this field and in the context of the EU - Mexico FTA 10th year anniversary to be commemorated on October 1st 2010, the Endowed Research Chair in European Studies on Development and Competitiveness (Cátedra Estudios Europeos sobre Desarrollo y Competitividad,) of the School for Government, Social Sciences and Humanities of the Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) headed by Dra. María de Lourdes Dieck Assad, former Ambassador of Mexico for the European Union, invites to the contribution for the working title:

"EU-Mexican Legal, Commercial and Business Relations"

    Covering topics involving:

    International and World Trade Law

    European-Mexican Business

    Economic Analysis

    European Community Law

    Business Strategies

    Political Economy Analysis

    Protection of Investment

    Institutional Cooperation

    Fair Trade and Social Responsibility

The abstracts of about 300-400 words in length should be sent no later than July 31st, 2009 to Gerhard Niedrist gerhard.niedrist@itesm.mx">gerhard.niedrist@itesm.mx, Associate Professor at the Masters Program of International Law at ITESM. Submitted abstracts for chapters will be reviewed for acceptance by a group comprised researchers from the organizing institution. Response on whether abstracts are accepted will be sent to submitters by September 2009. Final chapters (about 10,000 words including footnotes and references) should be submitted by February 29th 2010. The final papers should be in English and will be published through a major international publisher in the first half of 2010.

The final papers will be presented as one stream at the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Mexican Independence Conference to be held in Monterrey, México in September 2010.

    CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS

Proposal Submission Deadline: December 10, 2011
Extreme Leadership: Leaders, Teams and Situations Outside the Norm
    A book edited by
Dr. Cristina M. Giannantonio and Dr. Amy E. Hurley-Hanson
    Chapman University
    Orange, CA USA

    INTRODUCTION
While much is known about leaders and teams in traditional business settings, much less is known about the behaviors and processes of leaders and teams facing extreme situations. An extreme situation is defined as one that falls outside the norm; that is, the situation falls outside the scope of daily experience (Giannantonio & Hurley-Hanson, 2011). There are numerous historic and contemporary examples of leaders and teams that have survived extreme situations in both business and nonbusiness settings. Business examples include the exponential growth of Apple and Facebook in the midst of the current challenging economic environment. Historic examples include Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance expedition, while more recent examPles include the first responders to the events of 9/11 and the 2010 Chilean mine disaster and rescue effort. Companies are facing global and economic environments that fall well beyond the scope of their daily experience. One way to contribute to management practice is to better understand leaders and teams that exist, and thrive, in extreme situations.

    OBJECTIVE OF THE BOOK
This book offers an alternative lens through which to view successful leaders and teams by analyzing cases drawn from a diverse set of extreme situations. The book aims to develop a body of knowledge, research, and principles which can be extrapolated from these case studies. Authors may submit chapters which explore extreme leadership by focusing on extreme leaders, extreme teams, and/or extreme situations. Authors are encouraged to consider the construct of Extreme Leadership as research question. Why are some leaders successful and why do some fail? What are the factors that explain successful leadership and team behavior in extreme siutations> How do leaders and followers change as situations move beyond the norm into the extreme? What leadership lessons can be extrapolated from these examples to advance leadership research and management practice?

    SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Researchers are invited to submit a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the focus and content areas of the proposed chaPter. The deadline for chapter proposals is December 10, 2011. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by January 31, 2012 about the status of their proposals and will be sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by May 1, 2012. All submitted chapters will be reviewed using a double-blind review process. Contributors will be required to serve as reviewers for this project. Please contact either editor for further information. Submissions can be forwarded electronically in Pages, Word or PDF document format to Dr. Cristina M. Giannantonio at giannant@chapman.edu.

    Scope :

Corporate Social Action has recently been gaining increasing scholarly attention and is becoming a focal topic of business research. In this book we aim to focus on the interactions and interrelationship between Corporate Social Action, Corporate Social Performance (CSP) and Corporate Financial Performance (CFP). Indeed, the linkage between Corporate Social Action, CSP and CFP presents as yet unresolved issues. In particular, studies are inconclusive on the nature of the impact of a stakeholder-oriented Corporate Social Action on social and financial performance .

This edited volume welcomes studies that seek further insight on this issue. Although current studies on the linkage between Corporate Social Action and performance often take the narrowly-based perspective of the firm, we seek submissions with broad-based perspectives. Specifically, we encourage submissions that consider a diverse range of stakeholders, policies, business models and cases. In line with recent trends that see Corporate Social Action being adapted by companies the world over, we also encourage submissions that analyze international aspect and diverse local contexts and models .

    Topics covered :

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following :

    • The relation between Corporate Social Action, Corporate Social performance (CSP) and Corporate Financial Performance (CFP ).
