    Hello,

I am currently preparing my new syllabus on Global Leadership.   I would really appreciate to get any recommendations for cases or any example syllabi from other members of the group. Thanks in advance for your help!

We have four courses in Global Leadership at Tulane.  The first covers the world macroeconomy and institutions of global trade.  The second covers Latin America.  The third covers Europe, and the fourth Asia.  The first three are two-credit modules, while the fourth is a full three-credit coruse.  All except the first involve an international trip.

I teach the fourth course, Global Leadership IV-Asia.  In it, I take a sweep through Asia, beginning with India, going on to Southeast Asia.  Then on to Taiwan-Japan-Korea.  Finally, China.  Each area has its own special concerns, so I devote time to that concern in each area.  With India, it is the overwhelming diversity of the country.  In Southeast Asia, it is both cultural differences and the vulnerability of each economy, as well as the different forms of government.  In Taiwan-Japan-Korea, I teach about values-driven organizations and about closely interlocking firm governance.  In China, I begin with the 1978 start to the reform, and I bring them up to date, discussing pillar industries, sector-by-sector reform, state-owned-enterprise reform, capital controls, joint venture governance, financial sector reform, and "Woofies" (WFOE's).  I use a number of cases in each area to get into the hard realities of things, and I use a lot of video material to move the students emotionally from one area to another (Bollywood in India, cultural films in Southeast Asia, etc.)  I try to keep every class as rich with video material as I can, and it seems to work.

The trip for GL-IV is to Beijing, and it is hosted by Tsinghua University.  They provide faculty to give lectures on economic development, state-owned enterprise reform and other topics.  We have a series of site visits and some sight-seeing as well.  That format is essentially repeated with a different partner school in each of the overseas trips.

I intend to rework the cases and readings for this year, but I plan to keep the format of the course the same, as it worked well for me last year.

    I hope this helps.
