Apologies for cross-posting.

    Dear Colleagues,

The journal, Equal Opportunities International (EOI), is re-launched in January 2006 with a new editorial board. The EOI is committed to becoming a home for excellent research papers on equality, diversity, and inclusion in work, organization and society and the journal of choice for scholars in the field.

The attached document describes the journal, its new editorial team (123 scholars from 21 countries), and its goals. We hope that you will consider submitting your work to Equal Opportunities International.

If you have questions, please contact me, Mustafa Özbilgin, the new EOI editor, M.Ozbilgin@qmul.ac.uk, the Professional Insights Editor, Myrtle Bell, at MPBell@uta.edu or the Book Reviews Editor, Finola Kerrigan, Finola.Kerrigan@kcl.ac.uk

We look forward to receiving your papers.

    About the journal

Equal Opportunities International (EOI, established in 1982, now with a new editorial board, with members drawn from 21 countries) is a triple-blind peer reviewed journal, which publishes original, critical and scholarly papers that make theoretical and methodological contributions to our understanding of equal opportunities, discrimination, diversity and inclusion in society, organisation or work from any cognate perspective within social sciences or humanities. EOI is committed to becoming a home for excellent research papers on equality, diversity and inclusion and the journal of choice for scholars in the field.

Paper submissions should make original, critical and scholarly contributions to the theory, policy and/or methods in equality, diversity or inclusion in society, work or organisations. Each paper should be firmly located in literature and its objectives, methods, theoretical underpinnings and key contributions to theory and method should be clearly expressed. The articles must be original pieces of work that have not been published elsewhere and that are not under consideration for publication. The authors are required to write in plain English language and in a style that is free from technical terms.

We appreciate that the framing of equity issues is directly influenced by the local historical and socio-political contexts and encourage authors to consider their particular location in their submission and contributions. The papers should seek to appeal to both scholars in the field of equal opportunities and practitioners including equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion officers and policy makers from private, publics and voluntary sector organizations. The EOI is committed to social inclusion and social justice.

    Journal overview

Equal opportunities and its allied concepts, including inequality, inequity, disadvantage, diversity, and inclusion, have been studied extensively across all disciplines of social sciences and humanities. The promulgation of interest in the field of inequality owes much to the awareness that was brought about by the earlier human and civil rights and feminist movements which have engendered legal and social reforms that provide protections against unfair forms of discrimination. The advent of legal and social reforms in the field, as well as the broadening of the theory of equal opportunities to include a wider range of inequalities based on sex, race, disability status, age, sexual orientation, marital status, nationality and social class have all contributed to the general growth of scholarly interest in the field. EOI engages with this interest, offering a platform for critical and rigorous exploration of equal opportunities concerns including gender, ethnicity, class, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion, as well as other nascent and incipient forms of inequalities in the context of society, organisations and work.

It is important to acknowledge that there are some dichotomies between the reality and rhetoric of equal opportunities, the forms of practitioner and the academic knowledge in the field, scholarly approaches to equal opportunities across disciplines of social sciences and humanities, as well as their use of concepts and methods in order to uncover inequalities, and offer strategies for change towards equality of opportunity, valuing of diversity or pursuit of social inclusion. Further, there is a widening of the gap between studies that adopt micro-agentic, meso-institutional and macro-national approaches to the study of equal opportunities. In this context, the journal, EOI, seeks to serve as a proverbial bridge across the spectrum of scholarly research which is allied with equal opportunities and facilitate development of the academic field, by establishing a dialogue across its methodological, theoretical, applied and philosophical silos. This is only possible through individual and collective efforts of the members of the editorial boards, reviewers, authors and readers of the journal in supporting the scholarly rigour and status of the journal.

    Professional Insights

Professional Insights seeks proposals for submissions focusing on the professional insights and output generated from the field of equality, diversity, and inclusion. One aspect of Professional Insights includes interviews with eminent scholars, activists, and leaders who have made substantial contributions to the field. Some potential focal areas of the reports include, but are not limited to: What factors contributed to their development in the field and to their continued commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion? What are some of the barriers they faced? What recommendations would they make to budding scholars, activists, or leaders in the field? What are their perceptions of the future of the field? Questions of interviewees and focal issues for each interview will, of course, vary. Because the journal is an international journal, interviewees may not be well-known worldwide, but their contributions should, nonetheless, be recognized as substantial. Professional Insights seeks to contribute to international knowledge and recognition of contributors from around the world.

In recognition that many insights and output are generated from conferences that may take years to be widely disseminated (if ever), brief reports from conferences are another source of contributions to Professional Insights. The conferences may be of any size and in any locale, but should be focused on issues relevant to the journal. What was the purpose and primary theme of the conference? What types of attendees were targeted? What relevant insights resulted from the sessions and conference events?

Professional Insights may also include reports on community work, collaboration with industry, teaching, and other areas contributing to social inclusion and social justice. We are open to multiple perspectives on professional insights relevant to equality, diversity, and inclusion. While some articles may be commissioned, those interested in submissions to Professional Insights should send a query by e-mail to the Professional Insights Editor, mpbell@uta.edu for consideration.

    Book Reviews

Equal Opportunities International publishes reviews of single books and collections as well extended essays which review academic contributions and writings of eminent scholars or examine a number of books which focus on a specific aspect of equality, diversity, or inclusion. Authors who would like to have their own books reviewed in the journal are advised to contact their publishers or to independently send a review copy of their books to the Book Reviews Editor, Finola Kerrigan. Once a book is received it will be included in the review list and assigned to a reviewer, provided that a scholar volunteers to review it. Book reviews are expected to describe the content of the book, identify its likely readership, its key contribution to its field and unique features that set it apart from other books in the market.

Authors who are interested in writing extended book reviews are encouraged to contact the Book Reviews editor and express interest. The Book Reviews editor will then decide on commissioning the extended reviews which bring to our attention the texts that have made or potential to make a significant contribution to our understanding of equality, diversity, or inclusion in work, organisational or social settings. Contributions to the extended review essay section are expected to identify for readers of the journal the theoretical, conceptual and/or methodological significance and usefulness of the books that they are reviewing.

Authors and publishers whose books complement the focus of the journal are encouraged to send review copies of their books to the Book Reviews Editor, Finola Kerrigan, Finola.Kerrigan@kcl.ac.uk, Department of Management, King's College London, 150 Stamford Street, London SE1 9NHT, England, UK.

    Policy on special issues

Equal Opportunities International welcomes proposals for special issues. Proposals should include: a title for the special edition, an outline for the proposed edition, academic justification for such a special edition and how it fits with the broad aims and scope of the EOI, brief biographies of the proposed editors, a call for papers (one side of A4), a timeline for issuing and closing the call for papers, triple-blind review process and deadline for submission of the final manuscripts and the editorial section to the EOI. Proposals for special editions will be assessed by the members of the editorial board and a decision will be made based on the strength and suitability of the proposed edition. The EOI is unlikely to publish more than three special issues per year.

Selection of the editorial board members

We encourage well published scholars from less represented regions, themes and methodological perspectives to apply for membership to the editorial board (email the editor, m.ozbilgin@qmul.ac.uk with an up-to-date CV and a letter of intent). The editorial board members are selected on the basis of three key criteria: their eminence in the field of equality of opportunity as reflected in their publication record and editorial experience, desirability of their disciplinary and methodological approach, and the level of representation in the board from their geographic location.

    Copyright

Articles submitted to the journal should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. Authors submitting articles for publication warrant that the work is not an infringement of any existing copyright and will indemnify the publisher against any breach of such warranty. For ease of dissemination and to ensure proper policing of use, papers and contributions become the legal copyright of the publisher unless otherwise agreed

    Editorial objectives

The journal, Equal Opportunities International, (EOI) publishes research in the areas of equality, diversity and inclusion by sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, class, social background, and religion among others. The EOI also offers a suitable outlet for papers which explore discrimination, inequality, disadvantage, and integration in the context of society, organisations and work from comparative and international perspectives.

    The review process

The journal will house four types of contributions: (1) triple-blind peer refereed papers, which are received through its paper submission system, (2) commissioned seminal works from eminent scholars by invitation only (these papers will also be subject to triple blind peer review), (3) practitioner insights housing conference reports and interviews with eminent figures in the field of equality, diversity and inclusion and (4) book reviews with prior agreement with the Book Reviews editor. Upon receipt, the paper submission will be reviewed by the main editor, and if considered of suitable standard it will be sent for refereeing to two reviewers, based on its classification by disciplinary and geographic focus. When the two referees’ comments are received, the editor may decide to accept the paper, ask for revisions or reject it.
