Special issue of the International Business Review

    International business, corporate social responsibility

Deadline for submission: 1 June 2008

    Call for papers

While attention to the social and environmental impacts of international business is not new, the past years have seen renewed interest due to pressing global problems such as climate change, poverty and HIV/Aids, in which firms are called upon to play a positive role, and thus contribute to more sustainable development. This applies most notably to multinational enterprises (MNEs), given their global influence and activities in which they are confronted with a range of issues, stakeholders and institutional contexts, in both home and host countries. For MNEs, this is part of a balancing act of what can be called corporate social responsibility (CSR), in which they consider their various responsibilities: economic, legal, ethical, environmental and social. In the European context, the term triple P, or People, Planet, Profit, has also been coined to likewise point to the need for managers to focus concurrently on the social, environmental and economic dimensions of corporate activity, in order to help shape the (sustainable) future of societies worldwide.

It is sometimes suggested that MNEs’ CSR activities are becoming increasingly strategic, in the sense that they affect the core business of the firm and its growth, profitability and survival. In other words, CSR is moving from a public affairs to a core strategic activity. However, even if true, this is likely to be applicable only under certain conditions, depending on issue, stakeholder, country, industry and firm specific factors. The international dimension of these questions is extremely relevant, but has not yet been addressed systematically in international business research. Corporate social responsibility and sustainable development provide fertile areas in which both existing international business theories can be tested, and from which new insights into the dynamics of the interaction between MNEs and their national and international contexts can be induced. This includes for example, the exact workings of the interactions between Ownership or Firm-Specific Advantages, and Locational or Country-Specific Advantages, and whether or under what conditions CSR (components) may create competitive (dis)advantages at different locations.

This special issue aims to publish papers on CSR and sustainable development that are embedded in international business literature, and aim to contribute to our field as indicated above. We welcome innovative papers, both conceptual and empirical, both qualitative and quantitative, on CSR topics in relation to, for example:

    • Degree and spread of internationalisation/regionalisation
    • Headquarter-subsidiary relationships and subsidiary roles
    • Competitive advantage, growth and development
    • Firm performance
    • Foreign direct investment
    • Convergence/divergence
    • Supply chain management, offshoring/outsourcing
    • Networks and alliances
    • Mergers and acquisitions
    • Marketing in consumer and business-to-business markets
    • Issue management, reputation and brands
    • Codes of conduct and labelling programmes
    • Business-government relationships
    • The provision of global public goods
    • International stakeholder management

    CALL FOR PAPERS

EUROPEANISED AFTER ALL: European publics in the EU communicative space

Edited by Chiara Valentini (University of Jyväskylä, Finland) and Giorgia Nesti (University of Padua, Italy)

Proposals are invited for a collection that examines the EU and different communication actions towards, with, by different publics. Communicating the EU, its institutions, policies and achievements should not only be perceived as a top-down strategy, that is from the EU to its publics. Several interesting cases of bottom-up communication activities - from a public towards the EU - have shown to be of a great assistance to existing EU information and communication actions. In this respect, we are interested in presenting a portray of information and communication activities planned and/or already developed both by the EU institutions at the European, national and local levels and by private and public organizations and civil society actors. The intent is to analyse and discuss past, present and future actions, campaigns, initiatives from the perspectives of several EU countries. We welcome contributions from different theoretical perspectives and fields of study, including but not limited to political and intercultural communications, public relations and management, organizational studies, psychology, sociology and cultural studies. This book attempts to present different facades of EU communications within multi-national and multi-theoretical frameworks.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to):

    -          EU communication and information policies: we are interested in contributions that describe historical developments in the EU information and communication policies from the early stages of integration until recent events (the Plan D, the White Paper on Communication, etc..) but also in theoretical analyses investigating EU communication strategies.

    -          EU web communication (communications with citizens via web 2.0, such as blogs and other online media tools): the diffusion of ICTs and recent developments in the internet structure have opened up for new innovative forms of political interaction and participation. EU institutions are employing the web 2.0 to test new tools for communicating with citizens, such as EUtube, blogs, forum, etc. Besides, even more interesting experiences of Europeanization through the web are spreading from below, thanks to citizens' willingness of creating their own actions. Papers dealing with this topic should describe and critically assess EU initiatives on the web 2.0 and/or any relevant case study of online activities developed at the local/national or at the trans-national levels specifically aiming at creating an European public sphere.

    -          EU media relations (communications with/towards journalists/media): A discussion of EU policies and activities launched in the last 5-6 years for attracting national media professionals on EU issues and institutions, but NOT papers on EU media content analyses or discussing EU media coverage. In this topic we welcome critical discussions - even supported by qualitative/quantitative data - on what EU has lately been doing for addressing journalists' needs and expectations; for instance, analyses on the quality and usefulness of EU media courses for journalists or qualitative/quantitative studies on national journalists' satisfaction with the activity of EU press and communication departments, how cultures influence reporting EU news at the national level, differences/ constrains/ skills of Brussels correspondents versus national journalists, etc.

    -          EU and civil society (communication with/towards non-profit organizations/associations): Contributions should take a multidisciplinary look at the concept of civil society and its application at the EU level, focusing on the interactions between civil society organisations and the EU (functions, roles within EU political discourses and decisions making, significance of civil society's activities at local level, etc.). We also welcome case studies describing the activities of the national Europe Direct centres for the involvement of civil society organisations as well as studies on specific campaigns and informative actions implemented by civil society organizations dealing with EU themes.

    -          EU and its business partners (communications with/towards multinational companies). We are interested in papers that present both qualitative/quantitative studies and critical discourses on EU policies/ activities for involving diverse business partners/stakeholders as EU communication multipliers. We also seek case studies on activities created and developed by business partners/stakeholders which have an EU framework, for instance, but not limited, papers that present and discuss specific information campaigns put in place by financial/economic organizations for informing employees and surrounding communities about the introduction of the euro, about energy/environmental issues and/or other EU and business themes.

    -          EU diplomatic communication (communications with non EU nation-states). We are interested in contributions that describe EU information campaigns for the enlargement in new member states and/or in candidate countries and that critically assess the main issues concerning EU diplomatic communications.

    Guidelines for proposals:

Proposals should be between 500-1000 words. They should be sent via email to: dr.chiara.valentini@gmail.com and giorgia.nesti@unipd.it

Applicants should also send a short bio indicating title, affiliation, and scholarly interests.

The deadline for submission is 13th JULY 2008.

Applicants will be notified of the selection process by 15th AUGUST 2008.

We need to receive the final draft of the paper by 1 NOVEMBER 2008. The paper should be between 6000 and 8000 words and should be proofread by the authors. We will be more precise about the length once we receive specific information by the publishers.

    Summary info:

    Deadline proposal: 13 JULY 2008

Notification of the selection: 15 AUGUST 2008

Submission of the full paper: 1 NOVEMBER 2008

John McIntyre, CIBER, Georgia Institute of Technology

    Submission Deadline: May 1, 2009

The twenty first century has been dubbed the "Chinese Century". As <st1:country-region w:st="on">China</st1:country-region> becomes a dominant world economic actor, its enterprises increasingly look to distant shores in the <st1:place w:st="on">Western Hemisphere</st1:place>, the European continent as well as the Crescent of Crisis.  Its state-owned enterprises and nascent corporate forms are emerging onto the world stage.  The academic literature has begun to explore this new internationalization phenomenon.  Its size, corporate manifestations, impacts on Chinese growth, and the world economy and prospects are still not well understood.

A number of important issues need to be addressed in the process of the globalization of the Chinese firms. For example, what are the objectives of the Chinese firms that go abroad? How do they formulate and implement their strategy? How should their performance be evaluated?  Going abroad imposes an array of challenges to the Chinese firms, which have not been well exposed to operating in foreign environments. Their learning experience needs to be documented and studied.  From the perspective of organizational theory, we need to understand how the outbound Chinese firms design their organization, balance the headquarter-subsidiary relationship, and cope with foreign culture. Furthermore, we need to examine the interaction between the Chinese MNCs and the institutions ("game-rules") of the global marketplace. For example, what impact will the Chinese firms have on the institutions of the global marketplace? How do the global institutions affect the Chinese MNCs?

The topics envisioned for the special issue will be broad as long as they can be tied to the major themes of the globalization of Chinese firms. Appropriate topics for inclusion in the special issue could include but are not limited to:

*Objectives, strategies, and performance of Chinese firms in globalization

*Organizational design, structure, and outcome in globalization

*Dissemination of knowledge on the emergence of globalizing Chinese firms

*The impact of Chinese business and firms on global business and environments

*The role of culture and culture change in Chinese firms in globalization

    *Headquarter-subsidiary relationships in Chinese firms

    *Chinese business groups/conglomerates in globalization

    *Chinese family-owned firms in globalization

*Forms of engagement with foreign firms used by internationalizing Chinese firms (e.g. partnerships, acquisitions, OEM, ODM, OBM, etc.)

To date, much of the <st1:country-region w:st="on">China</st1:country-region> research has been forming a foundation for understanding strategy and performance, particularly of foreign firms in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">China</st1:country-region></st1:place>. However, there has not been very much work that examines the globalization of Chinese firms.  The articles in the special issue will also make theoretical contributions in internationalization, entry mode, organizational design, cultural change, and institutional environment.

We believe that the proposed work will enhance our understanding of the globalization of Chinese firms, both empirically and theoretically and should be widely cited as scholars and practitioners seek to explain how and why Chinese firms go abroad, how they perform, and how they interact with the global environment of business.

When submitting to the special issue, please follow standard MOR submission guidelines, which can be viewed at both http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/mor and  http://www.iacmr.org and are published in the first issue of every volume of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">MOR.</st1:country-region></st1:place>

Please submit your paper to the lead guest editor Ilan Alon (ialon@rollins.edu) and copy it to iacmr.mor@asu.edu. Identify your paper as a submission to the special issue on The Globalization of Chinese Enterprises. Papers will be double-blind peer reviewed. and acceptance decisions will be based on the standards described in the MOR mission statement.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS REVIEW - SPECIAL ISSUE

International Ethnic Entrepreneurship: Approaches and strategies of
successful immigrant entrepreneurs crossing national boundaries

National economies opened to the world and became more integrated in the
last 50 years. As also travel became easier and more affordable, people with
different national backgrounds left their homes and went into industrialized
countries as refugees, asylum seekers and economic migrants (Cross 1992,
Esping-Andersen 1993; Massey and Denton 1993). From the Chinese in greater
Asia and Canada, to the Turks in Germany, from the Algerians in France to
the Indians in Africa and New Zealand, the developed world became the final
destination of populations with different socio-cultural or ethnic origins,
which turned them into multi-cultural societies (Gorter et al. 1998).

Over the years, a significant shift in the work orientation towards
self-employment took place among these ethnic groups (Delft et al. 2000,
    Masurel et al. 2002, Min 1987, Waldinger et al. 1990, Ward and Jenkins 1984;
Kobrin and Speare, 1983; Lewandowski, 1980). Whereas most of them had been
employed as laborers in earlier years, they started to be active as
“ethnic entrepreneurs”. Instead of queuing for jobs with the
locals, they created work opportunities for themselves and even became
employers of other people as well.

Ethnic entrepreneurs are people who start their own business often through
an individual connection with former immigrants (Butler and Green, 1997)
through a set of regular patterns of interaction with them (Waldinger et
al., 1990). Ethnic entrepreneurs significantly influence national economies.
According to the Ethnic Minority Business Forum (2003) for example, there
are 66.000 ethnic minority owned businesses in London today, as well as
around 93.000 self employed people from ethnic minority communities. These
minority businesses employ well over half a million people. Also in other
parts of the world, ethnic minorities have started to have a say in
business; the ethnic Chinese for example have created large multi-divisional
enterprises in the host societies of Southeast Asia. Ethnic businesses
today contribute to the economy by increasing economic and cultural
diversity, reducing unemployment among immigrants and raising living
    standards in ethnic groups.

One of the important questions is which factors effect migrants’
decisions to engage in entrepreneurial activities. The decision has been
explained with either the Structural or the Cultural approach (Mavratsas,
1997). Whereas the Structural approach argues that the situation in the host
country is a prime cause for migrants engagement in entrepreneurial
activities (Cole, 1959), the Culturalist approach sees values and cultural
elements as the essential determinants of entrepreneurial activity. Studies
demonstrate, that these elements are similar in many aspects across
different minority groups. A comparative examination of entrepreneurship
among Maghrebian and Pakistani businesses for example shows, that
motivation, markets and the importance of family labour are equally
important. Studies also show that networks are determining factors in
entrepreneurship success, as network connections help ethnic entrepreneurs
raise money, invent technology, locate materials, get training and hire
    workers (Gabbay & Leenders, 1999).

Although studies on ethnic communities in business life have increased over
the last years, these studies have dominantly considered labour migration
and only limited attention has been given to entrepreneurial migration.
Whereas some works have dealt with this topic as well, most academic works
on ethnic entrepreneurship have told the stories of particular minority
groups in specific societies (e.g. Light and Bonachich, 1991; Silverman,
    2001 Folk, 2007).

This special issue of International Business Review focuses on two gaps in
the extant literature on ethnic entrepreneurship: First, unlike previous
work, which tended to focus on one country or one region of the world, with
this special issue we aim to cover a global scope with chapters on America,
Europe, and Asia. It is our intention to provide a broad perspective on the
nature and scope of entrepreneurship within ethnic groups and bring new
insights and methods to the phenomenon of ethnic entrepreneurs. Second,
most work until now has focused on the marketing related dimensions of the
phenomenon. This special issue aims to provide a management related
understanding of how international firms are organized to achieve their
strategic goals. Combining essays, case studies and empirical studies from
around the globe, we want to give a deeper understanding of the
characteristics, motivation and orientation of ethnic entrepreneurs as well
as their value systems, preferences, goals and management styles. It is our
aim to understand the success stories of ethnic entrepreneurs in different
environments putting special emphasis on the cultural, social and
institutional resources that made these successes possible.

    The multidisciplinary research journal

    announces

    Call for Papers

The journal welcomes studies that reflect a broad set of issues on organization-market interaction in emerging economies

The new journal 'Organizations and Markets in Emerging Economies' seeks to contribute to the development and dissemination of multidisciplinary knowledge on organizations and markets in emerging economies, to increase dialogue among scholars focused on a specific emerging economy or region and, finally, to encourage and give an outlet to high quality scholarship, both local and international, to this subject.

The journal takes a broad definition of emerging economies. As such, emerging economies include the transition economies of Central and <st1:place w:st="on">Eastern Europe</st1:place>, Asian nations (<st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">China</st1:place></st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">India</st1:place></st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Vietnam</st1:place></st1:country-region>, and others) that are increasing their free-market systems, countries in Central and <st1:place w:st="on">South America</st1:place>, and finally countries in <st1:place w:st="on">Africa</st1:place>. Each of these regions faces unique challenges and we encourage research that highlights the uniqueness of the particular region or country and combines that insight with broader lessons for other researchers.

The journal encourages studies that emphasize uniqueness of every emerging economy in terms of how (a) organizations are created, structured, managed and encultured; (b) markets emerge and are shaped by their historical, institutional and cultural context; and (c) how local and global institutions and forces shape both organizations and markets in emerging economies and how the two interact. Combining the differences and similarities of emerging economies with the interaction between organizations and their markets allows us to offer an outlet for scholars that analyzes the specifics of emerging markets from numerous perspectives. The study can have an economic, sociological or psychological perspective; on how organizations interact with markets may also cover research on marketing, consumer behaviour as well as studies in all types of communications.

The journal is open for various types of articles:

    -           review articles that summarize and evaluate the current stock of theoretical knowledge on a specific issue;

    -           conceptual/theory building articles that develop propositions and outline directions for further research;

    -           empirical papers that study specific issues employing qualitative or quantitative methodologies.

    Topics of special interest include:

    1.         Organizational learning and change in emerging economies.

    2.         MNE's in emerging economies.

    3.         Alliances, networks and clusters in emerging economies.

    4.         Corporate and functional strategies in emerging economies.

    5.         Market development and consumer behaviour in emerging economies.

We equally appreciate and encourage submissions by scholars from emerging economies as well as studies that are undertaken by researchers from developed countries. The strength of the journal will be the synergy of contributions from these two groups of scholars. This concept of synergy and balance is reflected in the structure of our editorial board as well as in the set of our reviewers, which allows the double-blind peer review procedure to be rigorous and constructive, helping to advance research papers.

The submissions will be considered for upcoming, as well as for or the later/subsequent issues of 'Organizations and Markets in Emerging Economies'. For more information, please visit homepage of the journal www.om.ef.vu.lt. Inquiries and papers should be sent by e-mail organizations.markets@ef.vu.lt.

    ·         Intentional vs. opportunistic impacts on family business practices in international expansion

    ·         Extension of family network relations into international operations

    ·         Where and how family groups internationalize

    ·         Types of strategic alliances that family groups use in their internationalization strategies

    ·         Family firm life cycles and internationalization

    ·         Sources of financing for implementing family business group internationalization strategies

    ·         Roles of governments, especially EU policies, on family business internationalization
