Position Description

    DEAN, CALIFORNIA SCHOOL OF

    BUSINESS & ORGANIZATIONAL STUDIES

    Alliant International University

The University: Alliant International University (www.alliant.edu) was founded five years ago by the merger of the California School of Professional Psychology and US International University (USIU) each with its own heritage and areas of specialization. Currently, Alliant serves about 3,500 students in six California campuses, a center in Mexico City, and a program in Tokyo. The University is currently about 90% graduate (master's and doctoral) but plans to increase its undergraduate enrollments. After experiencing some growth pains following the merger, the University has moved forwarded aggressively under the new leadership of President Geoffrey Cox and aims to be the premiere professional practice university in the areas of applied social science, in all programs incorporating multicultural and international perspectives. The University aims to double its size (to a head count of about 7,000) in the next 3 to 4 years. The University seeks aggressively to expand, both in the US and abroad.

As the result of a recent re-organization, the University has been structured into six Schools and Centers: the California School of Professional Psychology, the California School of Business and Organizational Studies, the Graduate School of Education, the Center for International Studies, the Center for Forensic Studies, and the Center for Undergraduate Education.

The Position The California School of Business and Organizational Studies (CSBOS) combines the California School of Organizational Studies of the former CSPP and the United States International School of Business of the former USIU to create a single combined organizational entity offering training from undergraduate to doctoral in business areas and organizational psychology. The purpose of the School is to offer its programs in I-O psychology, Consulting Psychology, OD, and OB along with Bachelor's, MBA, and DBA in business. Two divisions now exist within the school, the Organizational Studies Division and the Business and Management Division. Programs are currently offered at all California campuses except Irvine and Sacramento and in Mexico City. The position can be based at our Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco campuses. Because we are a multi-campus system, considerable travel is required.

Working closely with our current faculty, the Dean will be expected to move aggressively forward the agenda of integrating the strengths of the two areas of psychology and business in ways that enhance both areas and that improve the program's visibility and reputation. The current faculty include strengths in applications of psychology to business and organizations, the unique programs of Consulting Psychology and I-O/Clinical Psychology and, within the business areas, strategic management and international business. The new dean will be expected to strengthen existing programs and to build new strengths in innovative programs that compete nationally and internationally for students. Salary is competitive.

The primary focus of the business programs aims to be the effective management of human capital. The MBA program is currently undergoing a major curriculum revision to build special strengths in the human side of management and organization. S/he will be expected to bring the School into AACSB accreditation within five years. The Dean will need to improve the quality and academic reputation of all programs and to rapidly increase enrollments in all areas. Major hiring opportunities will present themselves as the programs grow in enrollments.

A number of new initiatives are underway including: on site corporate graduate programs, greater integration with our Mexico City programs, off-campus delivery of undergraduate degrees, and joint programs in China and Thailand.

Additionally, the School runs several consulting ventures (e.g., its Organizational Consulting Center) involving both faculty and students in applied consultation or research. The Dean will be expected to oversee the coordination and growth of these programs.

The Dean works closely with the Provost/VPAA (to whom the position reports), and with the five other School Deans and Center Directors. A collaborative and interdisciplinary approach is required.
