Second Call for Papers (and extension of deadlines):

"IS CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP MAKING A DIFFERENCE?"

An International Academic Symposium hosted by the United Nations Global Compact, the UNISA Centre for Corporate Citizenship, and the Lindenberg Center for Global Citizenship

Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration
    Accra, Ghana
    21-22 November 2006

Is corporate citizenship making a difference? We feel that this question will become increasingly prominent, as both protagonists and critics of corporate citizenship seek to understand, monitor, and enhance the contribution of business to sustainable development. It requires that we develop measures of success that are commonly agreed upon, that respond to the challenges of a transition to sustainability, and that relate to the broader impacts of business activity and not just discrete "best practice" examples.

Specific questions pertaining to the impacts of corporate citizenship efforts, and their measurement, are relevant at a variety of scales, including local communities, the firm, multi-stakeholder partnerships, initiatives such as the Global Compact, and even international aspirations such as the Millennium Development Goals.

The symposium will take place just prior to the Global Compact International Learning Forum Meeting. Keynote speakers include Prof Klaus Leisinger, special advisor to the UN Secretary General on the Global Compact. Papers discussed at the symposium will be considered for a special edition of the Journal of Corporate Citizenship, to be published winter 2007. (We also welcome submissions for the journal only.)

We invite abstracts of upto 1000 words for papers pertinent to any issues related to the impact of corporate citizenship on sustainable development. Please submit your abstract by 5 June 2006 (or preferably earlier) to Ralph Hamann (hamanr@unisa.ac.za) and to Manuel Escudero (escuderom@un.org). Authors will be notified regarding acceptance and registration will open on 19 June. Final papers of about 5000 words will be due 21 October.

The symposium will take place at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) (http://www.gimpa.edu.gh). The conference fee of US$400 covers airport transfers, three nights' accommodation and meals, a half-day field trip, all conference materials, and a gala dinner on 22 November at the La Palm Beach Hotel together with participants of the Global Compact International Learning Forum Meeting.

There are a number of symposium bursaries available for deserving applicants. If you would like to apply for a bursary please include a motivation letter with your abstract.
