    *********Apologies for cross posting*********

    Dear Colleagues,

My colleagues Charlotte Karam and Myself (Fida Afiouni) are currently preparing our proposal for the 5th Gender Presenter Symposium. Last Year, our symposium "The bursting pipeline: Gender, HR, and Avenues for Regional Development in the Arab Middle East",  was the recipient of the Emeralds best international symposium award and we are hoping that this year as well, we can put together another interesting symposium that is of relevance to the AOM's theme (opening governance) and that fits well within our research agenda.

With that in mind, we would like to invite you to submit a paper to this symposium.

This year, the symposium title is: Gender Mainstreaming and corporate governance: exploring potential approaches in developing economies. (please refer to the abstract below for further information about the symposium)

If you are interested in presenting a paper that fits within the symposium's theme, please let us know by sending an email to fa16@aub.edu.lb expressing your interest  before December 15th .

    Best wishes,

    Fida Afiouni and Charlotte Karam

Gender Mainstreaming and corporate governance: exploring potential approaches in developing economies

This year, we are inviting you to contribute to our symposium on gender mainstreaming and corporate governance. Although not exhaustive, the following is a list of some relevant questions that can help guide your contributions.

1-      Gender mainstreaming involves at least two different frames of reference: "gender equality" and the "mainstream." Thus gender mainstreaming is inevitably and essentially a contested process (Walby, 2005). What governance mechanisms can organizations in developing economies put in place to address the tension between "gender equality" and the "mainstream"? (i.e. (1) How can new gender norms "fight their way into institutional thinking in competition with traditional norms? (2) What negotiation strategies can stakeholders adopt to prioritize gender mainstreaming objectives over other business goals? (3) In assessing the outcomes of gender mainstreaming, how "success" is to be defined?)

2-      What predominant ideologies guide the vision of gender equality in developing economies? One typology of models of gender equality distinguishes between models based on sameness (equal opportunities or equal treatment), on difference (special programs) and on transformation (Rees 1998). A parallel typology distinguishes between models of inclusion, reversal and displacement (Squires 1999, 2005). Embedded within these debates are implicit theories of gender relations and their connections within a gender regime (Walby 2004).

3-      What is the relationship of gender mainstreaming with other complex inequalities, especially those associated with ethnicity and class, but also disability, faith, sexual orientation, and age?

4-      How should we be rethinking the concept and practice of democracy to include gender relations in developing economies?

5-      What are the implications of the transnational nature of the development of gender mainstreaming on gender mainstreaming in developing economies? (i.e. Gender mainstreaming is situated within the development of transnational global politics, of multilateral forms of governance such as the United Nations as well as the development of diverse global discourses of human rights that transcend country boundaries, each of which have disparate outcomes when in articulation with country differences).

Feel free to email me shall you need further information about the symposium. We also invite you to forward this CFP to colleagues who might be interested to participate.

    Best Regards,
