PDW on the Regional/Global Strategies Debate

Sunday, August 5, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Philadelphia Marriott, Room Franklin 9

    Panelists and Distinguished Speakers:

    Farok J. Contractor, Rutgers University

    Alan M. Rugman, Indiana University

    Michael D. Santoro, Lehigh University

    Ravi Sarathy, Northeastern University

Tatiana Zalan, University of South Australia

    Organizer and Presenter:

    Ellie R. Banalieva, Northeastern University

    Purpose & Relevance:

Recent research suggests the world's largest multinationals operate on a regional, rather than a global basis. This school of thought has elevated the supranational region as a new and relevant geographic unit of analysis. A simultaneous school of thought argues that multinationals are actually better off following global strategies. These two approaches are the basis for this PDW to further discuss regional internationalization.

The objective of this session is to discuss emerging research on regional/global strategies of high relevance to both scholars and practitioners in the international business, marketing, strategic management, organizational theory, technology management, and management consulting fields. More specifically, this PDW will focus on: (1) the theoretical and empirical challenges in the study of regional/global strategies; and (2) the potential directions for future research in the field.

    Format of PDW:

To help stimulate an interactive dialogue on the regional/global strategies debate this PDW will consist of three parts.

In Part I, each of the panelists will briefly present a specific topic of research as it relates to the regional/global strategies of multinational firms. A Q&A from the audience on any of the presented topics will follow these presentations.

Part II will be organized as a theme-related open forum discussion between the panelists and audience members on pre-selected questions emailed in advance from interested attendants to the PDW's Organizer:

If You Would Like to Attend:

We look forward to your participation and welcome your questions. Please email Ellie R. Banalieva (e.banalieva@neu.edu) by Wednesday, July 18 one or two questions that you are interested in for the panelists to discuss in Part II of the PDW. Your questions will be organized into main themes prior to the PDW and shared with the attendants and invited panelists.

In Part III, the panelists, along with input from the session's participants, will synthesize the implications for theory and practice, e.g., what are the new research opportunities on the topic? What are the implications of regional strategies for management practitioners?

For further information on this PDW, please contact Ellie R. Banalieva (e.banalieva@neu.edu). We look forward to meeting with you at what we hope will be an interesting and stimulating session.

    See you in Philadelphia!
