Poverty is a truly global issue, with more than 2.5 billion people living on less than $2 per day. Even within the developed world, poverty is a major issue, as, for instance, nearly 50 million people in the United States live below the national poverty line. When it comes to combatting this poverty, education is widely seen as a crucial component to any solution. Despite this, and despite the very direct link between management education and poverty alleviation, very little community exists amongst scholars and practitioners who undertake management and business education initiatives with a goal of reducing poverty. As a first step towards building this community of scholarship and practice, this workshop will draw on the pioneering experiences of a diverse group of panelists who have undertaken an array of poverty-alleviating management education initiatives. These panelists will initiate discussion groups in five key impact areas: Scaling up Microfinance, Motivating Youth Entrepreneurship, Building management research capacity in Africa, Developing managers, and Helping the vulnerable in North America. These discussion groups will form the backbone of this workshop, as the goal is to learn from each other's experiences and create community. There will also be a plenary session to discuss the commonalities between impact areas, with an emphasis on working management education initiatives into a stream of research. Finally, pre- and post-workshop activities will serve to increase the sense of community and to improve communication.

Pre-registration is required for this workshop. To register online, please visit https://secure.aom.org/PDWReg. The deadline to register is July 30, 2014.
