    Dear colleagues,
I have been asked to create a fourth year undergraduate course in international management with a focus on the "softer" management issues (as opposed to economics, finance, strategy and operations management).
I would appreciate any guidance on textbooks that you have found useful. I am having trouble finding one that suits this level.
I would also be grateful for any suggestions about stimulating experiential activities, cases and videos.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Christina

    Hi Christina,
Attached are 2 of my syllabi - one for grads the other for undergrads. I focus on international hr and ob. Two other great texts are Betty Jane Punnett's Experiencing International Business and Management: Exercises, Projects and Cases and Punnett's other book, International Perspectives on Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management. Hope that helps.

    Hi Christina,
You may want to take a look at International Organizational Behavior (2nd Ed.) by Francesco and Gold, Pearson Prentice Hall. It has a nice collection of cases and exercises targeting at the soft management issues, e.g., cross-culture motivation, negotiation, leadership, ethics, etc.

Hi Christina – a little self promotion – you may want to look at International Perspectives on Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management and Experiencing International Business and Management. I am the author of both and both are published by MESharpe. The Bafa Bafa simulation is my favorite. All the best, Betty Jane

In terms of stimulating experiential activities, we offer cross-cultural negotiations simulations that have been used by over 150 colleges and universities around the world.

Also in the self-promotion category, I would like to suggest a case I
    recently wrote:

Medical Equipment Inc. in Saudi Arabia

Joerg Dietz, Ankur Grover, Laura Guerrero

    Publication Date: 3/17/2008

A recently hired U.S.-trained sales account manager at Medical Equipment
Inc. (Medical Equipment) returned to his office after meeting with the
head of the cardiology department at a specialist hospital and research
center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He had worked very hard to secure his
first sale of US$725,000 for healthcare equipment, but was disheartened
when the head of cardiology told him that the hospital's purchasing
director intended to give the order to Medical Equipment's main
competitor. The competition's sales representative and the purchasing
director had known each other for 10 years and the head cardiologist
implied that there might be side payments involved. The sales account
manager knew Medical Equipment's product was superior and wondered how
he could secure the order without having a history with the purchasing
director or without engaging in practices he found ethically
    questionable.

I saw Joerg Dietz use it in the classroom, and I must say it worked very
well. It was the last case in the course (undergraduate level) because
it uses material on ethics, cultural differences, etc.

    Hi Christina:

As a (newer) co-author of the first and still one of the leading international management texts, I'd like to draw your attention to the 7th edition of International Management: Culture, Strategy, and Behavior (just out).   It includes a number of cases, simulations, role plays and other exercises exclusive to this book. Let me know if you'd like a sample syllabus for an international management course using this text.

    Best regards,

  • 8.  Textbooks for International Management course?

    Posted 04-28-2008 12:04

    Hi Christina,

    I used:

§         Deresky, H. 2008.  International Management: Managing Across Borders and Cultures, 6th edition, Prentice Hall, ISBN 0-13-614326-1 for a senior undergraduate class on International Management this semester. The textbook is new and came with videos which go along with specific chapters. It covers quite a fair bit of materials, but focuses more on the "softer" management issues.

§         Some of the cases in the textbook and 2 INSEAD teaching cases: (1) Banyan Tree Resorts & Hotels: Building an international brand from an Asian base (to go with chapter 6 and it also covered issues discussed in the prior chapters); and (2) Jaguar or Bluebird? Mark Chan's decision to stay overseas or return home after his expatriate assignment (A); From Jaguar to Bluebird – Mark Chan returns home after his expatriate assignment (B) (to go with chapter 10). The INSEAD cases may be in the "self-promotion" category, but I found them to go well with the chapters.

§         2 role-plays: (1) the Bafa Bafa Cross-cultural simulation game (my favorite too) and (2) Jose Ocampo negotiation simulation (from Hildy Teegen and Steve Weiss). These simulations worked out very well.

    Hope this helps.
