Have you ever thought about getting a Ph.D. in Business Administration and Management?
A doctoral degree qualifies you to pursue an academic career as a researcher and educator. Business Administration and Management (BA&M) is a broad set of disciplines that contributes to a better understanding of how firms and organizations generate and sustain value in the market place. BA&M means the backbone of a modern Business School but also the knowledgebase of many disciplinary Departments in modern Universities focused in Economics and Management.
Why at Bocconi? Our PhD is a 4-year full time program designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to acquire the research and analytical skills of the international scientific community. Bocconi's PhD program is uniquely multidisciplinary, pragmatic and eclectic. It is multidisciplinary, as it combines insights from a variety of disciplines related to management studies. It is pragmatic, because it emphasizes the abilities necessary to integrate different approaches in order to solve relevant problems in a rigorous manner. It is eclectic, because it focuses on the skills necessary to understand which specific tools and theories are necessary to solve different problems. To achieve these objectives, our first year students are required to acquire theoretical and methodological skills in different methodologies (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, historical methods, experimental, econometrics, etc.) and managerial areas (e.g., microeconomics, strategy, organization theory, marketing). In the second year, we offer four fields of specialization: Marketing; Organization Theory and Behavior; Strategic Management; Technology and Innovation Management. We also offer courses to specialize in Accounting. Our PhD program is part of a PhD School which fuels with its resources and human capital the curriculum of the PhD in BA&M. It is strictly linked to the Department of MGMT of our University. Its faculty members have earned their PhD in some of the most important international schools (such as Stanford, Wharton, Yale, IESE) and are highly productive in terms of international publications and also active members of international communities. They contribute to the international debate by publishing in and serving the editorial board of leading research journals (such as: The Academy of Management Journal; The Academy of Management Review; Administrative Science Quarterly; Management Science; Organization Science; Research Policy and many others).
What will you gain? Bocconi Ph.D. students are very successful. Current students regularly present their research at prestigious conferences held in the U.S. and Europe like the Academy of Management Meetings, the Marketing Science Conference; the Strategic Management Society Conference, the DRUID conference, the EGOS conference; the EMAC conference. Job placements are strong: indeed our current students have been hired as post-doc or assistant professors from schools such as: Michigan State University; Penn State University, Aston Business School; Imperial College Business School; Tilburg University; Rotterdam School of Management Erasmus University; Georgia State University. Some of our students have also started their career in private and public research institution.
