Dear Colleagues:
It is our hope that you can participate in the following PDW being offered at the upcoming Academy of Management Conference:
Session: "GLOBE Project Findings on CEO leadership: Reactions, Questions, and Practical Applications"
When: Friday, Aug 9 2013 3:15PM - 6:15PM
Where: WDW Yacht and Beach Club Resort in Cape Cod A
This PDW proposal has been organized to engage cross-cultural scholars in a discussion and examination of the latest GLOBE study results, based on the Phase 3 CEO Project.
During the PDW, we intend to engage the audience in dialogue regarding our new findings, and more importantly create a meaningful discussion as to how this research triggers research questions of interest to them. We will start with an hour overview of the latest GLOBE findings of CEO leadership behaviors and effectiveness across 24 countries. This research completes the third GLOBE phase where we studied more than 1,000 CEOs across the world with data from more than 5,000 Top Management Team members.
Some of the findings we will discuss are:
Culturally Endorsed Leadership Theory (CLT) predicts leadership behavior - While it seems obvious that successful executives will lead in a manner consistent with a society's preferred leadership expectations, the extant literature is mostly anecdotal. In our research, we examined the correlation between the 6 Culturally endorsed leadership dimensions (CLTs) and their actual counterpart leadership behaviors. Our findings show that five out of six CLTs are significantly correlated with their behavioral counterparts, meaning that CEOs tend to behave in accordance to societies expectations of their leaders.
Effective leaders exhibit specific leadership behaviors and not others - Perhaps not surprisingly, we found consistent leadership effectiveness when CEOs exhibited visionary and inspirational leadership behaviors. These two leadership behaviors impacted both internally oriented measures of effectiveness (e.g., employee dedication) and firm performance (e.g., domination of their industry). However, we also (unexpectedly) found that administrative competence was also crucial for effective leadership. Some CEO behaviors were constant across cultures (e.g., integrity) others more likely to exhibit cross-cultural differences in effectiveness (performance orientation).
During the second part of the PDW, participants will break into groups; some will discuss these findings in relation to their own specific research interests, others will discuss practical applications for educators, consultants and executives. The final portion of the PDW will be spent with each group discussing their conclusions with the whole group.
