    Colleagues,

Project work involving team members from different locations is becoming mainstream. In fact, academics like you and me routinely manage projects (e.g., conduct a study, write an article, organize a conference) with colleagues from different cities, regions, countries, even continents using a variety of means (e.g., email, Skype, etc.).

Caroline Lacasse (PhD cdt) and I are conducting a study on distributed project teams. The study aims at clarifying individual characteristics and contextual factors that contribute to project team effectiveness as a function of teams' virtual complexity (distance, project characteristics, etc.). Our study is particular in that teams that accept to participate will receive (via email) their own unique team feedback report. This report will suggest ways to improve your team's effectiveness and benchmark itself against other teams.

You are admissible if you are currently working on a project with at least one team member situated in another city, region, country, or continent. Participation is entirely voluntary.

There are 2 steps to participate.

STEP 1. After the consent form, you register the project and list up to 10 project team members. Names and emails will help us understand who is on which project and send the feedback reports. Results will remain confidential. Once the project is registered, you then answer a 30-35-minute secure (i.e., SSL3-encripted) questionnaire. Questions use numeric scales (e.g., 1=never, 5=always) and are easy to answer.

STEP 2. Once you registered the project and its team members, we send an invitation to team members who then only have to answer the questionnaire by referring specifically to the project they are registered to. There is a consent form as well.

Soon after you and others complete the questionnaire, your team will receive its feedback report.

This research has been approved by an anonymous committee of peers and abides to the highest scientific standards in the field of the social sciences. The research protocol also received approval from the university's ethics committee (Certificate #2009-A-168).

If you are concerned with the validity of this invitation, please do not hesitate to contact me (see signature below) and/or visit the study's web site.

Please use the following link to register your team and complete the questionnaire.

To avoid having your teammates register your project again, do not send them this link. They will receive a different link that only contains the questionnaire.

    Thank you,
