Scholars and practitioners have demonstrated a long-standing interest in how organizations respond to adversity that is a by-product of external forces. This PDW examines a number of timely questions: When and how do organizational leaders see developmental and learning opportunities in the difficulties their organizations face? When and how do executive-level managers exploit these opportunities to improve future organizational competencies? When and how do top executives garner lessons from the difficulties they face that help their organizations respond more effectively to similar difficulties in the future? We believe that these questions fit well with the "West Meets East" overarching theme of the 2011 Academy of Management meeting. In particular, the Chinese characters for "crisis management" translate to danger and opportunity. We have invited San Antonio executive leaders to discuss these important crisis management questions.
Four San Antonio executives discuss their organizations' exemplary actions in the face of major crises that affected their employees.
