Abstract:
The internationalization of firms, and notably of Chinese firms is becoming a growing concern to politicians, managers and academics alike. Yet, despite its prominence there is no consensus about the speed, direction and impact of China's Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI). While most accounts of it support the 'centrally managed capitalism' perspective, the contesting assumption points to the entrepreneurial acumen of Chinese firms. China's business system, however, is characterised neither by homogeneity in behaviour nor uniformity in policy implementation. Instead, we observe local autonomy and competition within the administrative structure leading to different legislation and regulation, the unpredictable application of laws and development of regulation leading to the widespread use of informal means for coordinating the activities of economic actors, and horizontal diversity among firms leading to novel or hybrid forms of organisation.
Acknowledging the rapidly increasing internationalisation of Chinese firms, this track asks to what extent the experience with endogenous institution-building at home serves as a blueprint for orchestrating Chinese OFDI and/or for coordinating Chinese-dominated value chains outside China. How, in the internationalisation of Chinese firms, do innovative agents and processes (innovation) lead to new institutional forms (governance)? We invite proposals dealing with: the link between institutional change at the local level, the national level and China's international strategies; the determinants of the spontaneous exodus of Chinese firms; the actors, processes and incentives which explain innovative (institutional) activities at the global level; the role of technical or organisational innovation in the process of internationalization; or the usage, development and effectiveness of informal institutions in the international arena.
