Abstract:
Much of global strategy, as taught in business schools today, is based on
the global business environment that existed in earlier eras, when the
global economy was dominated by Western economies and MNEs from developed
countries. Today’s global business environment, however, is being
increasingly shaped by emerging economies and new MNEs from these
countries. Emerging markets are characterized by the emergence of “new
players,” “new competitive phenomena,” and “new business models.”
Traditionally, it was the multinationals from developed countries that made
investments in, and brought their technologies and products to, developing
countries. Now, in the 2000s, we are seeing an increasing amount of FDI
from developing countries to developed countries. In addition, we are
seeing examples of reverse outsourcing, reverse innovation, and use of new
business models that offer learning opportunities for MNEs from both
developed and emerging economies. All of this has important implications
for business, government, and business and management scholars. The
proposed symposium will explore these issues utilizing latest research in
global strategy, internationalization, innovation, and leadership. It’s
especially appropriate given the theme of the 2011 Academy of Management
conference – West Meets East, Enlightening, Balancing, and Transcending!
Looking forward to meeting you in San Antonio!
