CALL FOR PAPERS
1. International Workshop on Career Management
"Promotion Systems: Rules - Experiences - Preferences - Attitudes"
December, 11-13, 2014
Reutlingen, Germany
The first international workshop on Career Management is to explore the dynamics of career management with a focus on promotion systems. Notwithstanding the trend towards dwindling importance of organizational careers (Cappelli 2003) in the context of boundaryless career norms (Arthur & Rousseau 1996) promotion decisions play an important role for career management. Given the significance of the varying rules and practices of organizational promotion systems, there has been a growing body of literature in this field. For example, Wils et al. (1993) distinguished three types of promotion systems: "building block", "organizational", and "club" model. Pehlan & Lin (2004) identified four systems: "merit-based", "up-or-out", "seniority-based", and "random" systems. Gunz et al. (2010) discerned "evolutionary" from "command centered", and "constructional" systems. Litz (2012) noted differences in four models: "tournament", "bureaucratic", "relationship", and "tenure" models. Reflecting various aspects of promotion systems, we invite scholars to the planned workshop in order to further advance knowledge in the field of career management. We welcome papers that are theoretical or empirical and based on various methodological approaches (e.g. case studies, industry studies, surveys).
We invite papers that address the following research questions:
- What kind of promotion systems can be distinguished? On what ground?
- What do existing promotion systems in organizations look like?
- Do particular types of promotion systems prevail in particular types of organizations (e.g. law firms)?
- Are promotion systems industry-, country-, culture specific? If so, which systems prevail?
- How do promotion systems change? Do organizations learn from problems with promotion systems?
- How are promotion systems related to other organizational aspects (e.g. employee morale, transparency, acceptance, legitimacy, culture)?
- What are stakeholders' (e.g. employees, high potentials, public) attitudes towards different organizational promotion systems?
Papers that analyze any other issues broadly related to the topic of career management are also considered. We welcome the submission of papers from experts in the field as well as from scholars from diverse academic disciplines (e.g. business management, international business, psychology, sociology, anthropology) and practitioners in international business.
We accept both fully developed papers and interim research papers in the form of working paper manuscripts. Unlike large conferences, this small workshop strives to facilitate in-depth and intense discussions around the topics. To this end, all accepted papers will be shared with participants in advance and assigned a discussant. It should be noted that papers must be written and presented in English.
