This PDW brings together scholars from institutional economics, institutional sociology, and business strategy to discuss the role of institutional intermediaries in helping to address voids in market-based institutions in emerging markets. The goal is to use cross-disciplinary insights to develop a sharper understanding of the nature of voids in market-based institutions and how the process of institutional intermediation –in which ongoing activities by businesses and other organizations contribute to building institutional infrastructure such as capital markets, labor markets, legal transparency, transparent business rules, robust supply chains, equitable gender engagement in business opportunities, and health care systems – can help address the voids in different geographic and institutional contexts.
The PDW will feature presentations by keynote speakers, who will reflect on critical issues such as what the causes and consequences of institutional voids are, what role alliances play in institutional intermediation and what governance issues arise in these contexts. These presentations will be followed by highly interactive breakout tables, involving Q&A with the speakers as well as identification of future research opportunities in this area and how these could be addressed.
