The AIB 2008 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for doctoral students in international business to explore their research interests in a unique interdisciplinary and interactive workshop with a panel of distinguished research faculty. The objectives of the 2008 Consortium are to provide a supportive setting where participants can: 1) receive feedback on current research and guidance on future research directions, 2) broaden their professional network, and 3) learn about the challenges of building a successful academic career in international business. The consortium is sponsored by the Sheth Foundation.
The Consortium will start at 9:00 am and end at 4:00 pm on Monday, June 30. This year the Consortium is chaired by Associate Professor Juan Alcacer from Harvard Business School. Among the distinguished list of faculty members confirmed for the 2008 Consortium are:

Preference will be given to doctoral candidates who have finished the equivalent of the thesis proposal defense. Selection criteria will be focused on quality as well as on achieving diversity in disciplinary and interdisciplinary orientations and geographical emphasis. Submissions whose topic relates to the main theme of the AIB 2008 meeting-knowledge development and exchange in international business networks-are especially encouraged.
Participants to the consortium are eligible for the AIB Award for the Best Doctoral Dissertation Proposal sponsored by the AIB Foundation.
There is a common application process for the Consortium and the Best Doctoral Dissertation Proposal. Submission requirements, which include a nomination by a faculty member and supporting materials submitted by the student, are detailed below. Please note that late submissions that do not follow these requirements will not be considered, as the integrity of the reviewing process depends on consistency across submissions.
Information to Be Submitted by Advisor:
- Letter of nomination: The student's thesis advisor should send by e-mail a nomination letter directly to the consortium chair. The e-mail should state clearly that the applicant has defended (or is expected to defend by June 15, 2008 at the latest) his or her thesis proposal. If the student is enrolled in a doctoral program which does not have a formal proposal defense, then the thesis advisor's statement of approval of the proposal will suffice. This e-mail can be sent to aib2008@hbs.edu at any time before the deadline, January 31, 2008.
Information to Be Submitted by Student:
E-mail your application in one file by January 31, 2008 to Juan Alcacer at aib2008@hbs.edu. Completed applications will be circulated to faculty advisors and student participants in preparation for the Consortium. Your application must include all of the following:
- An extended abstract of the thesis proposal (3-page maximum). Please include title, author information, abstract, keywords, and thesis research summary. References to previous work should be provided but do not count towards the 3-page limit. The extended abstract should succinctly cover the research question, theoretical background, proposed method, and intended contribution.
- A personal research statement (2 page maximum): This should provide a succinct and clear introduction to your research agenda.
- Curriculum Vitae (2-page maximum): A brief CV that describes the academic and work experience of the candidate.
AIB Award for the Best Doctoral Dissertation Proposal
The thesis proposal abstract will be the basis for selection for the AIB Award for the Best Doctoral Dissertation Proposal. The proposals will be judged by faculty advisors along the following criteria:
- Originality and theoretical foundations of the work
- Rigor and soundness of proposed method; and
- Potential contribution and impact of the proposed work to advancing the field.
The winner will receive a USD 1,500 award and two runner-ups will each receive a USD 500 award. The funds for the Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Award are provided by the AIB Foundation.
Application for Travel Stipend
Due to the kind support of the Sheth Foundation, several travel grants of up to USD 500 are available for students in need of financial support to attend the Consortium.
