Synopsis
This volume concentrates on the substantive gaps in the IB/IM field and addresses whether these gaps are resolvable with our current theoretical and methodological toolkit. This entails three specific queries about the past and present:
(1) Have our theories advanced some combination of explanation and prediction?
(2) Have our methods proven to be effective in providing rigorous, robust and consistent evidence with respect to the explanatory and predictive validity of our theories?
(3) Have we studied the right phenomena in the right way?
In addition, if we expect the field to move forward two additional questions arise:
(4) What are the "rising" phenomena that will impact the process of globalization? How is this related to:
a. The "practice" of globalization (from the perspective of those involved at the managerial, social, and political coalface)
b. The explanatory and predictive power of our theories?
(5) Do we have the tools to effectively dissect and deconstruct these "rising" phenomena?
The volume focuses on seven themes: (1) Emerging Markets, (2) People, Systems and Organizations, (3) Culture, (5) Foreignness/Distance, (5) Civil Society, (6) Knowledge/Innovation and (7) Internationalization. Within each theme leading scholars address the above questions and posit their opinions on the past and future of international business and management.
Timothy Devinney, the volume editor, will also be discussing the volume during his chaired session at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placetype w:st="on">Academy</st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st="on">Management</st1:placename></st1:place>.
