Dear Friends and Colleagues,
You are invited to attend an interactive Professional Development Workshop at the upcoming Academy of Management Conference on the following topic:
Teaching about Liability of Foreignness: Promoting Understanding of Challenges Facing Foreign Firms |
Sponsors: IM, TTC, BPS
Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 13 2011 4:00PM - 6:00PM
at San Antonio Convention Center in Room 204 A
The PDW involves a combination of short presentations and roundtable discussions. Each presenter will provide a brief overview of an issue relevant to teaching liability of foreignness (LOF). Then participants will engage in, and circulate among, small group discussions of each issue, that will be facilitated by the presenters.
We intent this PDW to provide suggestions and insights on different teaching approaches to make the concept of LOF and its implications for businesses more meaningful to students at all levels. Additional costs foreign firms incur due to LOF stem in large part from a lack of knowledge of business, institutional, and cultural differences in host markets. Many students often have difficulty grasping the pervasiveness of these problems. Despite evidence of its existence, many businesses still venture into new markets without sufficient understanding of the implications of LOF.
To insure broad applicability, the presenters will cover varied LOF topics:
· John Mezias – will facilitate the PDW and briefly discuss issues related to teaching our research in general.
· Mary Yoko Brannen – will discuss several techniques for conveying the importance of LOF as a phenomenon with significant firm implications to Execs, especially in classes with students from different cultures.
· Stewart Miller – will explain the need to give LOF more prominence in undergraduate international business course curriculum and the differences to consider when teaching MBAs versus undergraduates.
· Jonathan Doh – will describe the use of cases and simulations to incorporate LOF teaching points into courses with all levels of students and the complexities of teaching such material to both U.S. and non-U.S. students.
· Mikelle Calhoun – will talk about the challenges and opportunities presented when teaching about LOF in the virtual world of online courses and will explain the usefulness of online activities and information for teaching LOF as a part of both online and face-to-face class curriculum.
We hope to see you there!
Best regards,
Mikelle Calhoun
