Developing-Country Multinational Companies (DMNCs) have gained notoriety and attention in recent times as some have acquired advanced economy multinational companies (AMNCs) and emerged as leaders in their industries. This emergence has been widely acknowledge and discussed not only by newspapers and consulting companies, but also by a rapidly growing academic literature. However, a heated debate has emerged in the academic literature. Some authors argue that DMNCs are a new phenomenon that requires new models and theory. In contrast, other authors argue that we can use insights and theoretical arguments developed from the analysis of AMNCs to explain the behavior of DMNCs. A third set of researchers argue that whereas some of the behaviors of DMNCs can be explained within existing theoretical frameworks, other behaviors require new explanations. Thus, there is need for an in-depth reflection of what DMNCs represent for the theory of management in general and international management in particular. Therefore, the objective of the PDW is to assess what we know about this topic and reflect on what and how it can contribute to the development of theory. To do this, the PDW will start with some short presentations by experts in the field discussing their views on the topic and literature. This will be followed by a discussion in small groups to evaluate the topic based on the expertise and ideas of the participants. The PDW will conclude with a review of the lessons learned.

    See you on Friday!
