An emerging body of research in international business examines firm response to challenging environments involving disasters, conflict and crime. This work has two salient characteristics: (a) a focus on multinational enterprise (MNE) reaction to risk that encompasses potential loss of human life, including that of MNEs' employees; and (b) a particular notion of uncertainty, of immeasurable nature, where past events may not provide meaningful information to accurately assess the likelihood and intensity of future threats. The symposium seeks to generate constructive debate amongst scholars involved in this emerging research on the following topics: construct definition and overlap, the theorizing and measurement of risk involving deadly violence, and data challenges. As they debate on these issues panelists will discuss their work in progress.
