    Hello Everyone,

I have a few questions primarily for anyone who is in a position to hire
new faculty members. I am changing careers to become a professor in
management and I will complete my MBA this December. My next step is of
course obtaining either a Ph.D. or DBA.

Is there a preference among academics as to which would be a better
    choice?

I have seen a few accredited, online and Executive DBA programs such as
UMUC. What is the general attitude in the community about obtaining a DBA
from say, The University of Maryland University College (Online and in
Class Instruction)as a terminal degree for becoming a professor?

Does anyone know of a program that does not require a GMAT or GRE score?
The GMAT requirement for my MBA was waived due to my previous work
    experience and my undergraduate GPA.

Thanks in advance for your help,

    Steve Leon

    Dear Steve,

Reading between the lines, it strikes me that you are trying to do this in the easiest way possible, a natural thing to want. But if you want a serious academic career, as opposed to being an adjunct, you should seek to get into the most academically demanding program you can, which is definitely not an Executive DBA. The latter is not designed for an academic career but for people who wish to remain in practice. I recommend that you go talk to a range of programs. Taking the GMAT would help you find your level.

I give you this advice from the stance of someone who has a DBA (from Harvard), has been both an adjunct and a chaired professor, and who went from business to academia and now back to business. I also recently organized a workshop for executives seeking to convert to academic careers.

    Good luck.

    George

That is one side, Steve, and George stated everything very well. If Harvard is an option for you both academically and financially, I agree with him totally. If not, consider being a (non-serious?) adjunct like I and many of my friends are. We work from home on our multiple computer set-ups, travel with a laptop around the world working from Internet cafes, and enjoy the tax benefits of a home office. We also usually start out making over $100,000 our first year and don't have to participate in student advisement, committee work or being threatened with losing our jobs if we don't publish in someone's idea of an A journal. Everytime I click on my Bank of America online account information, I am perfectly content to be considered non-serious by bright, hard-working folks like George. 'Scuse me, gotta go; I just attended a conference in Vegas and need to organize my receipts for my tax accountant.

Good luck, best wishes and stay in school,
    Lois, Have Internet, Will Teach
