Almost two decades have passed since the idea of the boundaryless career was proposed as an alternative inter-organizational lens to capture the nature of contemporary careers. The concept has broadened the research agenda beyond the focus on careers within large bureaucratic organizations and highlighted the role of factors such as the interface between work and life, embeddedness in occupational communities, and idiosyncratic views of success in shaping career development and identity at work. While the balance of cumulative research is certainly positive, critics have argued that the empirical basis for an increase in inter-organizational mobility is modest and that the boundaryless career presents important conceptual and operational limitations. Rather than dismissing the notion of the boundaryless career, this conference builds on the virtues of the concept to inspire a reflection and critical discussion about how to progress career theory and research beyond the duality between bounded and boundaryless careers.
