• 1. European Management Readings

Posted 03-01-2007 09:19
I am taking a group of students to Greece for five weeks this summer (and hopefully multiple locations next year) and will be teaching an undergraduate special topics course on European Management. I find that texts on general international management are too broad. I will probably take an HR/OB slant on things, but welcome other input.

I am asking the members of this list for suggested books and articles to assign students that provide insight into this topic. Popular press books or articles along with academic sources are welcome.

Of course I do realize that there are differences between countries/identity groups within Europe, however I would particularly like the students to understand some of the major socio-cultural differences between many American managers and European managers, and the systems within which they work.

The recent growth and subsequent emphasis on Asia has produced a plethora of material for that region, and I am hoping for some suggested recent publications on the EU side.

I will summarize responses back to this list.

Classic Hofstede is probably not a bad place to start. I find Susan
Schneider and Jean-Louis Barsoux's 2003 book, "Managing Across Cultures"
very good for a European Perspective.

Best,

I want to extend a big thank you to everyone that took the time to respond to my request for suggested readings for a course in European Management. Several off-line discussions ensued and while differences between EU countries were recognized, some agreements were reached regarding important differences between the U.S. and Europe: e.g., the perceptions of quality of life and use of free time, methods of governance, control systems, legal issues in HR, time perceptions, the role of businesses in society (and the opposite), etc.

The readings that were suggested were tremendous. I have a lot to look over!
