Understanding scholarly impact: What is a scholarly home run and how do I hit one?

    Organizers:

    D. Scott DeRue and Christopher G. Myers

    University of Michigan

    Have you ever wondered...

    • How do I craft a meaningful and impactful career as a scholar?
    • What does it mean to have impact and what are the criteria upon which we judge impact?
    • How do I write a "home run" article that changes the field? How can I shape our field with a collection of "singles" and "doubles"?
    • Where do "high impact" ideas originate from?  Is it luck, skill or a little bit of both?

If you care about having impact as an organizational scholar - or simply enjoy debating the idea of scholarly impact - this session is for you!

On Saturday, August 13th at the Academy of Management conference in San Antonio, a panel of senior scholars will discuss their personal journeys of scholarly impact. The panel consists of:

    • Susan J. Ashford (University of Michigan)
    • Murray Barrick (Texas A&M University)
    • Adam D. Galinsky (Northwestern University)
    • J. Keith Murnighan (Northwestern University)
    • Barry M. Staw  (University of California-Berkeley)

Each panelist will share his or her thoughts and experiences with respect to defining scholarly impact and producing "high impact" research. The panelists will also answer questions from the audience. Our aspiration is that this session not only initiates a thoughtful discussion about what it means to have scholarly impact, but also that this session is a source of inspiration and guidance to junior faculty and doctoral students who are embarking on their own scholarly journeys.

    Date: Saturday, August 13

    Time: 3:30-5:30pm

Location: Grand Hyatt, Texas Ballroom B
