This is the third time that we have offered the PDW and it has received excellent reviews. Although registration is required, no code is needed.

The purpose of this Professional Development Workshop (PDW) is to discuss key issues that confront department chairs and to provide participants with the opportunity to share experiences with - and learn from - other chairs. Participants will be required to pre-register. Registration is open to those who are currently serving chairs or individuals who are slated to become chairs in the near future. This four-hour workshop includes a leadoff plenary session with two speakers highlighting key challenges and issues that department chairs face today. Following the plenary session, there will be five breakout sessions, each of which will be moderated by one to two department chairs (listed above). While most of these chairs have many years of experience, some with less experience have been included to provide perspectives on the challenges that new chairs face. These breakout sessions will focus on the following topics: (1) evaluating and mentoring faculty on research and teaching, (2) dealing with power, politics, and cultural change (3) dealing with low performing faculty, (4) recruiting and maintaining a diverse faculty, (5) managing time and conflict. Participants will rotate through these breakout sessions on 30-minute intervals. There will be a short break during these sessions, providing an opportunity for participants to have individual conversations with other participants. The workshop will end with a wrap-up session where the moderators (topic chairs) will recap and summarize the key issues discussed at their roundtables.

Pre-registration is required for this workshop. To register online, please visit https://secure.aom.org/PDWReg. The deadline to register is July 30, 2014.
