CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
"FOSTERING PUBLICATION FROM AROUND THE WORLD IN LEADING ORGANIZATION AND STRATEGY JOURNALS"
Academy of Management Conference 2011 in San Antonio, Texas
The Global Representatives of the Business Policy and Strategy Division solicit submissions for a professional development workshop specially targeted at scholars from regions historically under-represented within the top journals, yet seeking successful publication in such outlets. The workshop allows participants to learn from the experiences of several journal editors and star scholars, and receive feedback on their own working papers. This interactive workshop has four components:
(1) Dialogues on framing and submitting manuscripts from outside North America: challenges and common pitfalls Will Mitchell (Duke University), Co-editor, Strategic Management Journal Adelaide Wilcox King (University of Virginia), Associate Editor, Academy of Management Review Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra (University of Southern California), Review Editor, Journal of International Business Studies
(2) A case study of submission and resubmission: "How Much Does Industry Matter, Really?" (published in Strategic Management Journal, 1997, joint with Michael Porter) Anita McGahan (University of Toronto)
(3) Publishing and building an academic career outside North America: different experiences from different regions Harry Barkema (RSM Erasmus University & LSE), Europe Wei-Ru Chen (INSEAD), Asia Sergio Lazzarini (Insper Institute of Education and Research), Latin America
(4) Individual feedback from facilitators on submitted working papers Tunji Adegbesan (Lagos Business School) Moses Acquaa (UNC at Greensboro) Pao-Lien Chen (National Tsing Hua University) Francisco Díaz-Hermelo (IAE Business School) Hans Frankort (Cass Business School) Thomas Mellewigt (Freie Universität, Berlin) Raffaele Oriani (LUISS University, Italy) Glenn Rowe (Ivey School of Business) Roberto Vassolo (IAE Business School)
Selection process
Interested scholars should apply by Monday May 30, 2011 by submitting an email to the organizer belonging to their region (see below), attaching (a) a current CV and (b) a completed manuscript that is almost ready for submission to a research journal. Participants will be notified of their selection by mid June, 2011.
Space permitting, the first three components of the workshop will also be opened up for submitters that have not provided a completed manuscript to the organizers.
In order to encourage participation from historically under-represented segments of the academic community, the BPS Division will be offering accommodation plus a refund of up to $800 on airfare expenses to San Antonio, to five scholars whose proposals have been independently accepted for participation in this PDW. Financial support will be offered on the basis of: (a) quality and promise of the manuscripts, and (b) demonstrated need; both to be determined solely at the discretion of the BPS Division. The organizers would therefore like to solicit submissions especially from authors who otherwise might not consider attending for economic reasons.
