Hello,
Please post following information regarding a studentship opportunity at the Centre for International Business, University of Leeds (UK).
The Centre for International Business, University of Leeds (CIBUL) and the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) have been jointly awarded a three year, full-time ESRC CASE studentship that will fund a doctoral research student to undertake a project entitled 'Regional Strategies of British Firms and Competitiveness in China.' The project will be led by Prof. Peter Buckley of Leeds University Business School in collaboration with Chen Wu (of CBBC), with Adam Cross and Dr Hinrich Voss also comprising the Leeds team.
Building upon the 'China's Regional Cities' research project conducted jointly by CIBUL and the CBBC for and on behalf of UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) (for more information, see: www.uktradeinvest.gov.uk/ukti/chinacities), this three year studentship will investigate the managerial decision-making and strategising structures of British multinational enterprises that operate in, or are expanding into, locations in China beyond the major conurbations of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. In particular, it will examine: (i) to what extent British companies are able to successfully identify locations in China that match and enhance their resources and capabilities, (ii) the degree to which such firms achieve a good fit between their resources and capabilities and the industrial competencies of particular regions of China, (iii) the factors driving the relocation of activities away from larger municipalities towards regional cities in China, and (iv) the role that headquarter directives and subsidiary-specific ownership advantages play in this process.
The project will therefore identify and characterise the industrial competencies of China at a sub-national level, and will relate these to the resources and capabilities of British firms which have expanded their sphere of operations to China's regions. It will also raise understanding of the sources of competitive advantage of British firms in China, and will identify mismatches and opportunities at the firm/region interface in China from which both managerial and policy advice will be formulated. The project will thus inform academia as well British business, directly and through the activities of the CBBC.
CIBUL has been independently acknowledged as one of the world's leading centres of International Business research, while the CBBC is a non-for-profit organisation and the UK's leading organisation for helping British companies to develop their businesses with China.
The ESRC CASE studentship will commence on 1st October 2010.
