This panel discussion explores the evolving theory of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs), starting from Hymer's foundational work to contemporary debates in international business. Scholars have long examined the existence of MNEs, focusing on internalization, transaction costs, and market imperfections. Over time, the motivations of MNEs have shifted towards asset recognition and competence creation, especially in networked organizations operating across multiple locations. The panel will delve into the complexities faced by modern MNEs, including decision-making at various organizational levels, the role of co-creation and business model innovation, and the challenges of navigating governance scrutiny, knowledge transfer across borders, and effective subsidiary management. This panel discussion aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of when and why it makes sense for firms to pursue multinational operations.
